Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs designated product development, qualification or project test phases; performs laboratory work which is closely supervised and wherein objectives, technical decisions and methods are prescribed, clearly outlined or made by others. Conducts work phases in strict accord with established procedures; follows written and verbal instruction and secures technical guidance and assistance, as required. May specialize or perform a combination of routine metallic and non-metallic laboratory duties.
  • Assists in the setup and operation of mechanical testing apparatus and equipment, as directed. Conducts motion, burst, flow, leak, life cycling and similar mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic tests. Performs physical testing of bonding and adhesive agents, resins, plastic and impregnated materials, nylon cloth, silicone, neoprene and similar rubber and plastic compounds and ingredients used in the manufacture of non-metallic products.
  • Takes pre- and post-test measurements and readouts to determine and record part and material motion and movement characteristics; verifies axial movements, degree of angulation, gimbal and bearing action, part offset, clearance and fit; checks compression and extension limits, critical length part deflection, deformation and distortion.
  • Plots and summarizes test data; prepares statistical reports, charts and graphs, as directed. Prepares and maintains test logs, records and reports; records test data; participates in data reduction; prepares manufacturing specification outlines, illustrations and sketches.
  • In connection with the aforementioned, performs a variety of non-technical laboratory assignments such as handling, moving and storing of laboratory supplies; making minor repairs to test apparatus and equipment; transporting units; preparatory fabrication and assembly operation and other mechanical work requiring a combination of shop skills proficient use of standard shop equipment, hand tools an instruments.
  • Performs clerical and other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Requires 5+ years experience in related aerospace manufacturing laboratory and product development/testing phases.
Test Laboratory Technician II - Must have a minimum of two (2) years' experience in laboratory and product development/testing phases. Must have related knowledge of or training in technical arts and physical sciences.
Test Laboratory Technician III - Must have a minimum of zero to two (0-2) years' experience in laboratory and product development/testing phases. Must have related knowledge of or training in technical arts and physical sciences.
  • Must demonstrate solid knowledge of/ability to utilize engineering principles, technical arts and physical sciences.
  • Must demonstrate solid understanding of/ability to utilize shop mathematics and drafting room techniques/ practices.
  • Must be able to read calipers, height gages and dial indicators.
  • Must have strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Constantly (6 - 8+ hours): Standing, walking, lifting of 10 - 20 pounds.
  • Frequently (3-6 hours): Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, grasping, feeling, hearing, talking, repetitive motion of the hands/arms/feet/legs, eye/hand/foot coordination, keyboarding, lifting of 20 - 30 pounds.
  • Occasionally (up to 3 hours): Sitting, climbing, vibration, lifting of 40 - 50 pounds.
  • Never: Lifting 40lbs or more without the assistance of another technician or lift hoist.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Must have good verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be able to read calipers, height gages and dial indicators.
  • Must demonstrate understanding of shop mathematics, basic engineering principles, and drafting room techniques and practices.
  • Background of candidate must be in metal/composite test (not electromechanical).

EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.


MISCELLANEOUS:
  • Exposure to noise: Constantly (5 - 8 hrs/shift).
  • Exposure to chemicals: Grease, Oil, Alcohol.
  • Working with or around: Drill press, conventional milling machine, bandsaw, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, mallets, test gauges, various engineering test equipment.
  • Safety glasses are required in the Engineering Lab and other designated areas throughout the Facility.
