The School of Art & Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time 12-month Visiting Education Technology Specialist. The Visiting Education Technology Specialist will coordinate projects integrating art and technology at the School of Art & Design (A+D) and manage the operation of laboratories and other educational resources of A+D. The successful candidate will provide specialized expertise using technological advances in the teaching, creation, and presentation of art and design by students, staff, and faculty. She/he will develop, implement, and maintain technological resources supporting the research and educational activities of students and faculty.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Instruct and assist students and faculty in the use of specialized art and design equipment and technology.
  • Administer and maintain computer, video, digital imaging facilities, and digital output devices, in conjunction with other facilities staff, including the installation and maintenance of equipment, servicing user requests, performing basic troubleshooting and/or repairs, and coordinating with outside facilities for the repair of equipment.
  • Administer and maintain woodworking, metalworking, casting, fabrication, and computer controlled machining devices, in conjunction with other facilities staff, including the installation and maintenance of equipment, servicing user requests, performing basic troubleshooting and/or repairs, and coordinating with outside facilities for the repair of equipment.
  • Consult, advise, and interact with faculty and staff to facilitate research, and assist in integrating technology into courses and curriculum.
  • Identify and evaluate resources, obtaining information relevant to technology-based projects, and consult with faculty/staff/students to plan and execute projects.
  • Serve as a liaison with other skilled specialists, faculty, and students, both within and outside A+D and the University of Illinois to support collaborative projects, and recognize, recommend, and facilitate connections with campus technology centers.
  • Supervise and manage graduate and undergraduate hourly student employees (approx. 100 annually). This includes hiring, training, monitoring performance, scheduling, and assigning work tasks for these employees.
  • Facilitate the management, maintenance, and operation of the School's equipment distribution center and the associated database.
  • Manage laboratory facilities account database system, working with IT staff to design and coordinate the interface of the database of user billing and faculty-student resource-access privileges with the University's systems and network, respectively.
  • Create informational resources for the use of laboratory facilities and equipment.
  • Some evening/weekend hours are required.


Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education
Required: Bachelor's degree
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a field related to the visual arts.

Experience
Required: Minimum of two years of experience utilizing machining or output technology in a creative or educational environment.

Knowledge

Required: Able to concurrently manage multiple tasks. Self-directed and motivated with a well-developed ability to adapt and engage successfully with diverse individuals. Excellent decision making qualities, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred: Capable of using computer-based processes as artistic conduits, research, teaching, and presentation tools. Able to comprehend the academic research needs of students working with technology.

Appointment Status: This is a visiting, 12-month academic professional position. This position may become non-visiting at a later time, dependent upon funding and programmatic needs.
