Under the direction of the Associate Director for Education Abroad, assists in the coordination and promotion of education abroad opportunities at the University of Connecticut. As part of the advising team, assists in the effective administration of education abroad programming. Works closely with students in all phases of the study abroad process, including outreach, advising, monitoring applications, pre-departure, onsite support and re-entry. Incumbent is expected to work independently, but within the defined procedures and guidelines established by the Associate Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • As part of the Education Abroad team, assists in the effective administration of education abroad programming and delivers high quality advising that meets the expectations and goals set for by the Associate Director.
  • Advises students on education abroad program options, opportunities and requirements. Conducts individual advising for students on personal and academic goals, program selection, health and safety concerns, inter-cultural competency, etc.
  • Assists students with the study abroad application process, including advising on financial aid and scholarships, courses equivalency process, registration, transcripts, credits and other administrative tasks.
  • Maintains expert understanding of University policies pertaining to education abroad. Responds to inquiries from students, faculty and others regarding program policies, procedures and requirements, making referrals as appropriate.
  • Reviews applications and makes acceptance decisions using the online nomination/application/approval processes for programs, monitoring compliance with requirements and policies and maintaining accurate and up-to-date student records using the Terra Dotta software system.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty for the recruitment, enrollment and preparation of students for UConn administered programming.
  • Assists in maintaining the content of guidebooks, presentations, website and other informational literature for students, faculty, parents, and other offices, following best practices in education abroad.
  • Promotes education abroad program by holding information sessions, participating in education abroad fairs, campus events, etc.
  • Assists in administering and awarding the Global Citizenship Scholarship program and other scholarships, making recommendations or improvements.
  • Advises on student visa requirements, assists students in preparing visa applications and works with consulates or visa service providers to process visa applications when necessary.
  • Maintains effective relationships with faculty, academic departments, administrative offices, overseas partners and program providers. Acts as liaison between the overseas partner/program provider and students.
  • Stays abreast of all travel alerts, travel warnings and events abroad that might affect students. Stays in contact with students while they are overseas, providing assistance as necessary and appropriate.
  • Attends regional and national professional conferences to keep abreast of best practices in international education, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Occasional nights and weekends required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree in related field.
  2. At least three years in international education, advising, student services, or related experience.
  3. Effective interpersonal, listening, oral and written communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work with and convey information to multiple audiences (students, parents, faculty, administration, etc.)
  5. Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with sensitive matters.
  6. Excellent computer skills, including a mastery of MS Office.
  7. Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience studying, working or living abroad.
  2. Experience advising students on study abroad, and working with parents, advisors, staff and faculty.
  3. Ability to work well under pressure and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, especially during peak times of the year.
  4. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  5. Experience with student management software such as Terra Dotta and Peoplesoft.
