DIRECTOR OF LEARNING RESOURCES FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
Boston College (BC), a Jesuit, Catholic university in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader to serve as its next Director of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes (LRSA). This is an extraordinary opportunity to provide strategic and innovative leadership to a dedicated team of academic directors and counselors who work closely with student-athletes to ensure that they are successful both in the classroom and in their athletic endeavors.
Located in the Office of the Provost and Dean of Faculties, the mission of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes (LRSA) is to provide individualized academic support services to all varsity student-athletes. LRSA offers academic counseling and advising, content tutoring, developmental instruction, progress monitoring, services for students with disabilities, and a supervised study center. Following the Jesuit traditions of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and unity of heart, mind, and soul (developing the whole person), LRSA’s goal is to help all student-athletes reach their intellectual, social, and personal potential.
As the level of excellence expected in the classroom and in athletic competition for BC student-athletes continues to intensify, the success of and supportive services provided by LRSA are more important than ever. A member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) since 2005, BC student-athletes contend in one of most competitive of the Power Five conferences in Division I athletics. Academically, admission to BC has also become increasingly competitive as more students with superior academic records, intellectual curiosity, and scholarly promise continue to apply. The office of admission works closely with the athletics department staff and coaches to ensure that all student-athletes recruited and admitted to BC have the intellect and motivation to compete with the incoming class while also committing to the time required of Division I athletics. LRSA is a crucial part of the academic success of these student-athletes.
The next Director of LRSA will join BC at a propitious moment in its history. A new Director of Athletics, Martin Jarmond, begins in the summer of 2017, and there is also strong support from the Office of the Provost to examine and enact program priorities and policies with the charge to make innovative changes as needed. Increased collaboration between academics and athletics will be essential. The successful candidate must demonstrate a distinguished record of program implementation and staff development as well as a commitment to establishing partnerships across the institution. An understanding of the academic rigors of the BC student-athlete is also paramount, as is recognition of the unique and transformative standards of a Jesuit education.
