Job Description:

Reports To: Dean of the School of Education

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Mills College Upward Bound Program (UB) is a federally funded college preparatory programs that offer assistance to low-income and first-generation college-bound students. The Upward Bound Program is dedicated to helping participating students in the Oakland Unified School District graduate from high school with a solid foundation (i.e. completion of required coursework and possession of a strong GPA) necessary for entering college. UB continues to support participants to ensure continued college enrollment and, ultimately, graduation. The Mills Colleges Upward Bound Program has been serving the Oakland Unified School District since 1966.

The Program Director is responsible for managing and conducting student recruitment process, supervising and training academic advisors and residential staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Recruit, train, and supervise advisors and residential staff
  • Conduct and document student recruitment process, career & academic counseling services, caseload contact and evaluation reports
  • Serve as a liaison to the target schools, community agencies, and general public
  • Serve as liaison to admissions, financial aid, housing and recreational departments on campus
  • Reside in the residence hall and supervise residential and academic activities
  • Identify and secure classrooms, tutorial facilities, textbooks, and other classroom needs
Requirements:

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in education or related field and 5 years equivalent work experience for a UB/TRIO/Educational Equity Program of similar size and scope that includes a summer residential program
  • Masters degree desirable
  • Counseling and supervisory experience
  • Residential experience
Skills & Knowledge:
  • Excellent verbal, written & computing skills
  • Expertise in budget management, personnel training and development
  • Successful grant writing and development
  • Ability to work with college and community personnel
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with LIFG students or from a background similar to that of participants
  • Familiarity with target area and community resources
  • Experience with database operations and in filing Federal reports such as APR
