The statistical research scientist will work on one or more of a number of large initiatives, both federally and industry supported, that are in need of statistical leadership. In addition to general statistical experience, the ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: design and analysis of NIH-sponsored and/or FDA compliant clinical trials, statistical modeling with applications to risk prediction and assessment of novel biomarkers, statistical methodology for analysis of epidemiological data including electronic health records, pharmaco-epidemiology.
Working closely with medical colleagues, the candidate will: take a leadership role in planning and execution of studies involving substantial statistical involvement; Participate in strategy sessions for designing and implementing clinical studies; Supervise the conduct of database integrity checks and help to develop guidelines and rules for database error identification.
Upon completion of experiments and analyses, actively participate and collaborate in preparation of scientific publications based on the results and presentations of findings at local, national, and international meetings; Interface with other statisticians and computational biologists at Duke University, including the Duke Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and the Duke Clinical Research Institute.

The above roles are the expectations for a Statistical research scientist. To become a Senior Statistical research scientist, the following should also be present:
-Develop novel statistical approaches for the evaluation of:
outcomes related to drug or device exposure and safety
important factors identified as a result of critical clinical trial so improvement in the efficient conduct of clinical studies
epidemiological studies in disease prevention or control
-Disseminate the information on these approaches through presentations at major statistical meetings and publications in major statistical and clinical journals.
-Take a major role in applications for external funding, either as a Principal Investigator or as a co-Investigator.
-Interface with other statisticians and computational biologists external to Duke University including the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health and industry sponsors.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Skills and Experience:

Required
:
A PhD degree in biostatistics, or a related field.
Experience in SAS/R/Splus software/programming
Highly self-motivated individual, enthusiastic about scientific discovery and able to collaborate closely and effectively with other members of a research team
Excellent communication skills(verbal, written and presentation)

Desirable: Experience as a collaborating statistician on a variety of study designs
Professional knowledge of biology and biomedical research
Three years or more experience Managerial experience
Experience in randomized clinical trials# Experience in observational data analyses
Core Competencies for This Role Must exhibit the ability to take clinical requests and convert them into statistical methodology. This includes the implementation of nonstandard methods.
Can effectively explain the need for nonstandard methods to clinical collaborators and gain their acceptance for the use of these methods. Has displayed the ability and initiative to learn needed methodology rom the statistical literature and apply the new methods to clinical projects when needed. Can learn and effectively apply new statistical programming languages in situations where current packages are not optimal.
Can mentor other statisticians in statistical methodology and programming.
Can communicate effectively with a variety of types of collaborates, statisticians, programmers, clinical operations specialists, clinicians, and administrators.
Can effectively represent the DCRI and its business interests as well as function as the statistical expert at national and international meetings
