Degree and Area of Specialization:

BS or higher degree preferably in an occupational safety area or a profession or science related to environmental health and safety. Achievement of applicable licensure is also preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum seven (7) years of experience required, ten (10) years preferred, in an occupational or environmental health and safety profession. Demonstrated ability to create and foster a culture of safety, deliver continuous improvements in a complex regulatory environment, and develop positive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals. Prior experience with conducting research laboratory safety inspections, hazard analyses, and hazard and operability studies is desired.

Position Summary:

The Director for Safety will be responsible for developing, supporting, managing and promoting comprehensive multidisciplinary laboratory safety programs necessary to maintain a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors in the College of Engineering (CoE). The Director will be a member of the CoE leadership team, and will report to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs and work closely with the College of Engineering Safety Committee, Department Chairs, Center Directors, faculty and other College administrative team members. This position will be the CoE liaison to the UW-Madison Environment, Health and Safety department within in the Division of Facilities Planning and Management well as other campus/state officials.

Additional Information:

The position requires strong organizational skills as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A high degree of motivation, demonstrated capabilities in planning and prioritization of tasks, ability to be flexible in work assignments, independent problem solving and analytical skills are also important to the position.
