Position Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director for Spartan Academic Support Services (SASS), the Learning Specialist/Academic Coach is responsible for the supervision and overseeing of the development and implementation of programs and services designed to meet the needs of student-athletes diagnosed with specific learning disabilities and/or considered to be at risk academically. In addition, the individual will serve as an Academic Coach for 2-3 teams which manages the NCAA rules and regulations regarding academic eligibility and day to day academic success. Lastly, the position will develop and coordinate an organized effort to enhance and nurture the relationship between the student-athlete and SASS and the student-athletes, coaches and faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Learning Specialist/Academic Coach is responsible for adhering to the philosophies and regulations of the Department, Conference, University, and NCAA as they relate to assigned duties in the Spartan Academic Support Services area. This individual will oversee the implementation and coordination of the Learning Enhancement Program, coordinate individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes, and coordinate the initial identification of student-athletes who may benefit further from diagnostic testing. The Learning Specialist/Academic Coach will also work with student-athletes on learning and studying strategies designed to enhance academic performance and graduation from the University, serve as a resource to the tutorial and Spartan Academic Support Services staff on relevant learning strategy issues and develop, supervise, and implement tutor and educational mentoring training programs. In addition, the individual will act as a resource for staff and coaches in the areas of learning development, disability identification and referral, providing training in these areas as needed and provide referrals to the Office of Accessibility Resources & Services and appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.

The Learning Specialist/Academic Coach will work closely with other employees in SASS. This individual will coordinate payroll aspects of the Learning Enhancement and Tutoring program in conjunction with the Director of Spartan Academic Support Services. This individual will be responsible for the academic counseling of student-athletes as assigned. This includes, but is not limited to, coordinating and supervising study hall activities, tutoring activities, and approval of course related books; communicating with student-athletes, coaches, and other applicable administrative staff regarding assigned student-athletes' academic records regarding matriculation, graduation and NCAA eligibility; and monitoring and identifying the means for student-athletes to satisfy NCAA progress toward degree completion requirements, as well as specific program graduation requirements. The individual will be able to counsel and advise student-athletes in establishing realistic and attainable goals regarding course and major selection, study skills, time management and career choices. This position will also be able to maintain confidential student files and records documenting all pertinent student-athlete academic and NCAA eligibility information within the Department, University, NCAA, and FERPA regulations, and utilize the registration and records system regularly to monitor and update internal academic records.

Lastly, the Learning Specialist/Academic Coach will be expected to meet with prospective student-athletes during the academic portion of the recruitment process to disseminate information regarding the Spartan Academic Support Services program and general university academic requirements and will be responsible for keeping abreast of current trends and developments in the field through publications, seminars, and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is a prerequisite for this position.
  • Experience in special education/school counseling, or in a Division I athletic institution, or combination of both.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience as a learning specialist for student-athletes preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency administering academic support programming preferred.
  • Experience in teaching learning strategies and developing academic intervention strategies to enhance learning for students with academic challenges preferred.
  • Working knowledge of computers and student database systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse educations, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
