The University of Miami is currently seeking a Director for the Office of Technology Transfer. The Director is responsible for increasing, improving, and accelerating the commercialization of University of Miami intellectual property, with the intent of affecting a positive financial impact on the University through royalties, contract research from startup and established companies, and joint ventures with strategic industry partners.

The qualified individual should have a minimum of twenty years of experience in the management and marketing of intellectual property, with broad expertise in corporate product development, business management, academic technology transfer, translational research, identification of commercial partners, licensing and creation of start-up companies.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Manage staff in the OTT office, including oversight of the quantity and quality of the work product of licensing managers and other support staff; documentation of performance via the annual review process, utilizing metrics developed by the OTT Director and the Vice Provost for Innovation; training of office personnel with regards to policies, procedures and strategies
• Frequent review and oversight of procedures for managing: invention disclosures, including assessment of patentability and commercial potential; patent process; licensing; all other pertinent agreements
• Develop and maintain metrics and financial goals to ensure continued positive impact and relevance of technology transfer; actively assess customer engagement and satisfaction
• Oversight of support staff for development and maintenance of a pipeline/database for UM’s IP; utilization of the pipeline for management of patenting and commercialization
• Management of the OTT budget, including utilization of the IP pipeline to remain within budget in the current fiscal year (FY) and make budget forecasts for the upcoming FY
• Oversee OTT personnel in development and maintenance of the OTT/innovation website; ensure quality and timeliness of the website
• Work with license managers, inventors, UM Vice Provost for Innovation, Miller School Chief Innovation Officer and Coulter Center personnel (the “innovation team”) to follow the progress of IP from the invention disclosure stage through the patent process and commercialization; including licensing, business incubation, company formation, faculty and student education, translational research and pursuit of funding
• With the Vice Provost for Innovation and the innovation team, play a major role in outreach to private, venture, angel, and strategic investors and development of local, state and national networks in support of innovation and commercialization
• Play a significant role in updating and implementing institution-wide policy relative to intellectual property, patents, copyrights and licensing
• Work with the innovation team to create, promote and implement educational activities for faculty, staff and other UM personnel

Education: Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in engineering, management, business administration or biological sciences Experience: Minimum of twenty years of experience, encompassing corporate product development and business management, as well as academic technology transfer activities, including experience in management of translational research projects towards commercialization – management of invention disclosures and the patenting process, identification of commercial partners, licensing and creation of start-up companies. Minimum 5 years supervisory experience required.

Skills & Abilities: Excellent verbal and written skills, high level proficiency in verbal and written English, ability to package complex information into highly effective and concise presentation. Hands on experience with market assessment, regulatory review and commercial risk assessment for academic IP.
