Assistant Professor of Biology/Director Montana Field Station

Job Description Summary:
The University of La Verne Department of Biology is excited to invite applications for a tenure track, Assistant Professor of Biology faculty position. Biology is a strong and growing undergraduate department that is part of a Natural Science Division, situated within a college that stresses interdisciplinary approaches to education, community engagement, and undergraduate research.
A successful candidate will have a record of scholarly productivity as evidenced by presentations and publications, and display a readiness to work closely with a diverse student body and faculty colleagues through innovative pedagogy, research, and service initiatives.
Candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching, including a strong desire to establish research projects that provide valuable learning opportunities for undergraduates.

Specific Duties:

This position is primarily a faculty appointment with administrative responsibilities (Director, Montana Field Station):

Faculty duties:
• Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of teaching/research/service at a liberal arts college and be committed to the mission and vision of the department.
• The successful candidate will teach in the life science curriculum (e.g. animal biology, general biology for majors, and evolution) with special emphasis in field and/or environmental biology (vertebrate biology and marine & freshwater biology). The ability to teach a scientific writing and biostatistics course is desirable.
• Other faculty responsibilities include academic advising, research mentoring, and faculty committee participation.
• Developing an extramurally funded research program involving undergraduates (apprenticeships), experience and/or interest in developing course based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs)

Administrative duties:
• Directing and ensuring proper management of the University’s Montana Field Station.
• Creating and supporting collaborations with colleagues and other institutions that utilize the University’s Montana Field Station, including those that generate revenue for the station.
• Candidate is expected to spend a minimum of one month at University’s Montana Field Station during the summer.



Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD in environmental biology, ecology, zoology, or in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to supervise Field Station student staff, leadership to support research based at Montana Field Station, leadership to improve Montana facilities, coordination of Montana field biology summer courses and contributions to community engagement.
