Assistant Biosafety Officer/EH&S Specialist III
This position will report to the Senior Biological Safety Officer within EH&S and act as the Alternate Responsible Official for the Select Agent Program. The individual will assist in overseeing safety and regulatory compliance of the BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratories as well as the BSL-3, ABSL-3, and Select Agent laboratories.
The successful candidate will oversee the day to day responsibilities associated with the Select Agent Program such as conducting inventory verifications, submitting regulatory amendments for removing, adding and renewing personnel, collaborating with the Police Department to conduct and facilitate the Security Risk Assessment (SRA) access approval process, (FBI background checks), and ensuring compliance with the suitability assessment program. The individual will also assist with completing annual requirements of the program such as inspections, training, reviewing manuals, conducting emergency drills and exercises and other compliance issues. This person will be expected to assist with BSL-1 and BSL-2 laboratory compliance, work closely with the Institutional Biosafety Committee, assist with review and approval of Laboratory SOPs, and other duties.
The Assistant Biosafety Officer will provide critical safety and compliance assistance to programs such as biosafety lab inspections, training for and shipping of infectious agents, conducting risk assessments, and conducting incident investigations. Other responsibilities may include providing support to various EH&S programs including being available for emergency response (24/7) as necessary.
Discipline in Biosafety/Select Agent:
- Ability to obtain FBI clearance for Select Agent approval.
- Basic knowledge of NIH, BMBL Guidelines, rDNA regulations, CDC, APHIS, and MA DPH regulations, biosafety including Biosafety Level 3 and Animal Biosafety Level 3 regulations and, packing and shipping of infectious materials regulations.
- Basic knowledge of biosafety including performing lab safety inspections.
- Possess aptitude and willingness to don appropriate PPE for entry into BSL 3 containment areas.
Required qualifications: BS degree in Biology, Microbiology, or other Biological Sciences. The candidate could be an experienced Biosafety Professional, Biological/Microbiological Researcher, or other related background with knowledge of high containment laboratory operations and safety.
Desired qualifications: MS degree, RBP, BSL-3/ABSL-3 experience, Select Agent experience (SRA) access approval.
