The Chaplain for the Muslim Community is student-centered, a creative-thinker, inclusive, engaging, and promotes Muslim life to the campus community. The Chaplain for the Muslim Community provides spiritual care to the campus Muslim community, and organizes and implements outreach to Muslim students, staff, and faculty across gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, cultures, and a variety of traditions and observances to build a vibrant and active Muslim community. The Chaplain for the Muslim Community is a member of the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life team within the Diversity and Inclusion Department. This position reports to the University Chaplain.

The Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life seeks to develop an inclusive religious and spiritual community that reflects the overall academic mission of the University. The mission is brought to fruition by providing worship, creating learning and social opportunities for education and development of students within their religious and cultural traditions, fostering a safe environment for spiritual and religious exploration, and encouraging respect and civil discourse among diverse religious groups and individuals. The Chaplain must possess:

• Effective community organizing skills and comfort building relationships with diverse populations;
• A pluralistic approach to Muslim life, an ability to inspire Muslim young adults, and the character to serve as a role model;
• A passion for engaging students through Islamic learning and an ability to foster intellectual, spiritual, and ethical curiosity and exploration;
• An ability to articulate and develop an intentional vision for Muslim student life while following through with colleagues on implementation and execution of a stated vision;
• An entrepreneurial mindset that supports innovation and risk, as well as learning from failures.

Job Duties -

• Provide spiritual support for the Muslim campus community.
• Create a vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere for Muslim life on campus, ensuring that multiple points of access to Muslim life and pluralistic Muslim community thrive.
• Increase visibility of Muslim community on campus and in local community.
• Coordinate Jummah prayer and provide support for the observance/celebration of Muslim holy days.
• Advise the Bucknell Muslim Students Association (MSA) and provide mentorship and guidance to the leadership team and members of the organization.
• Serve as a resource on matters of Islam, religious diversity, and interfaith dialogue for the broader campus community.
• Organize religious and cultural events.
• Organize programming to help educate non-Muslims about Islam and clear common misconceptions.
• Collaborate and work with the University Chaplain, Chaplain for the Jewish Community, Chaplain for the Catholic Community, and other religious advisers to promote inter-religious understanding and appreciation for religious diversity.
• Collaborate with offices within the Division of Student Affairs and other university departments to ensure cohesive programming and services.
• Collaborate with the Office of Admissions on recruitment efforts for Muslim students and meet with prospective students and parents as appropriate.
• Work with and provide outreach to Bucknell's extended constituencies such as alumni, parents, area Muslim community members, and Islamic organizations.

Departmental & Divisional Responsibilities:
• Assist with the management of Diversity & Inclusion departmental projects, strategic plans, and staff development.
• Represent the Diversity & Inclusion department and the Division of Student Affairs by serving on University committees.
• Attend and actively participate in office, departmental, and divisional staff meetings and retreats.
• Maintain a high degree of visibility and availability to students, faculty, and staff.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications -

A bachelor's degree is required, while a master's degree or other graduate study is preferred. Academic preparation may be in any relevant discipline. Students enrolled in a master's or doctoral level program that are finishing their education are also welcome to apply.

The successful candidate must have a broad based knowledge of Islam and Islamic practices, as well as evidence of academic engagement of the religion and its history. S/he must be able to organize inclusive Muslim prayer and practice experiences, provide learning opportunities within the Muslim community, and enhance religious literacy on Islam for the broader campus community. The new Chaplain must be able to effectively advise and provide inclusive, non-judgmental emotional and spiritual support/counsel for students.

Additional requirements include:

• Experience in a higher education environment and student programming or the equivalent
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• An ability to effectively interface with a wide variety of constituents including students, faculty, staff, prospective students, and alumni.

This position requires some evening and weekend work.
