Director, Labor Relations

Responsible for modeling Service Excellence while working with unionized staff to drive employee engagement and development. This includes; administering various human resources plans, policies, and procedures, assisting in the development and implementation of employee policies and procedures, facilitating discussions between managers and staff when discrepancies arise, and conducting separation conversations when necessary. This role is also the co-owner of the design and administration of the performance evaluation process and supporting programs (performance improvement, coaching and development plans) as well as training College employees in varies learning and development programs. This position is responsible for supporting unionized staff members on all campuses; both national and international.
Essential Functions:
1.Formulates, recommends and implements goals and objectives in all areas of employee relations and engagement.
2.Develops, implements and administers the management -staff relations areas in an effort to improve labor relations.
3.Ensures Emerson College is in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.
4.Represent HR in union negotiations to ensure consistency across the college.
5.Investigates concerns such as working conditions, disciplinary actions, and employee and applicant appeals and grievances. Provides guidance and recommendations for problem resolution to departmental managers and staff.
6.Prepares and presents required reports as requested.
7.Partners with staff on all ER related issues (accommodations, leaves, performance coaching, etc)
8.Continuously develops and implements performance management process. Reviews all staff (Director and below) appraisals to ensure consistency and valuable conversations.
9.Monitors development and performance improvement plans.
10.Partners with colleagues across campuses to ensure job descriptions are viable, current and reviewed by compensation.
11.Conducts exit interviews and identifies opportunity to drive employee engagement based on feedback.
12.Effectively recommends hiring, promotion, termination, disciplinary and commendatory actions of all assigned personnel.
13.Serve as point of contact for unemployment claims and processing for unionized employees.

Campus Location: Boston Campus

Required Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources management or related area. Competency with MS Office suite software, especially EXCEL and MS Word. Knowledge of laws and regulations related to HR function, such as EEO/AA, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, and employment laws and regulations. Knowledge of benefit administration.

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge:

Required Prior Work Experience:
Requires 8 years of Human Resources experience, with at least 5 years as a generalist on an FLSA exempt level, and 3 years as a manager.

Job Duties:
  • Counsel staff and faculty members in positive employee relations practices while proactively providing guidance and counseling in the area of employee relations, investigating and resolving ER issues and situations according to policy and in compliance with statute and regulations, and coordinating efforts with the legal department.
  • Design and implement the performance evaluation program, including training management members in program goals and concepts. Review all completed appraisals and partner with managers on creation and execution of all development and performance improvement plans. Work with staff and management to provide coaching and guidance in the creation of individual development plans, performance improvement plans and coaching conversations.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for various departments across the campus.
  • Serve as point of contact for union employees with unemployment claims.
  • Work with union groups to keep agreements updated.
  • Create and generate various analyses, reports, and documentation to develop solutions to problems and issues.
  • Participate in campus wide committees or projects that will enhance employee engagement and retention
