Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life
The Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life reports to the Associate Dean of Students and is responsible for overall strategic management of the residence life and housing operations. The Assistant Dean supervises the Assistant Director of Residential Life and has a staff of 21 Resident Assistants. The Assistant Dean manages the Residential Life program that supports a vibrant residential student living/learning environment and enhances student growth and development. The Assistant Dean will work closely with the College’s facilities management department to maintain the physical facilities and manage the housing operations. The Assistant Dean will develop and implement a residential curriculum program that furthers the educational, social, and goals of the College in this residential setting. The Assistant Dean will live just off campus in the neighborhood adjacent to the College in College-owned house. The Assistant Dean represents the Dean of Students Office on various committees and serves as one of the rotational On Call Deans on duty.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strategic leadership, vision and management of Residential Life program with 1200+ undergraduate residents and 14 residence halls and student apartments.
- Provide supervision, training, and ongoing professional development for an assistant director and 21 undergraduate Resident Assistants.
- Develop and assess ongoing strategic plan for residential life.
- Organize and manage residential life department budget
- Responsible for oversight and management of housing operations including room draw/lottery process, placement, hall openings and closings, room inventory system, and working closely with the College’s facilities services operation.
- Development and oversight of departmental policies, procedures, strategic plans and assessment.
- Development and implementation of a residential curriculum program model.
- Recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of employed student Resident Assistants.
- Coordinate all aspects of the housing assignment process including: returning student room draw, first-year, transfer, and readmitted student assignments, housing exchange program with other Claremont Colleges, room change requests, and overflow housing triage.
- Oversee residence hall damage assessment, collection and appeals and work cooperatively with the Facilities Department and Student Accounts on the same.
- Support the facilities department in their maintenance of the College’s Fire Safety Log, and ensure accurate and timely reporting of residential building fires pursuant to The Clery Act.
- Oversee department publications, website and other communications.
- Maintain effective communication and working relationships with Campus Safety personnel to ensure safety and service standards for residents.
- Assist students with academic, personal, social, and health issues and make referrals to appropriate on and off-campus offices and support services. Communicate with other Dean of Students staff regarding student issues and individual student concerns.
- Assist with crisis intervention: stabilize situations, investigate and resolve student concerns, and coordinate the notification of the appropriate individuals in accordance with College policies, guidelines, and professional judgment.
- Adjudicate student conduct cases.
- Serve as a member of standing committees including, but not limited to, the Claremont Colleges Residential Deans Committee and the Emergency Incident Management Team, which requires this position to respond to campus during emergency situations impacting residence halls.
- Serve in the On‐Call Dean rotation 2 -3 weeks per semester and share in the winter break and summer On-Call Dean rotation.
- Represent the Residential Life program and Dean of Students office to prospective students, parents, CMC staff, and CMC faculty.
- Develop, interpret, and enforce College policies.
- Be available for occasional evening and weekend duties.
Education: Master’s degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education or related field required.
Experience: 5+ years of experience in Student Affairs or related field with previous experience in residence life and supervision of student staff and preferably professional staff.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
- Must have proven organizational skills, superior interpersonal skills, and the ability to use tact and exercise a high level of discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
- Must be self-motivated and comfortable working with minimal direction.
- Individual must have proven ability to prioritize concerns and respond accordingly using tact and sound judgment.
- Must have an ability to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees and professional level staff. Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software such as Maxient.
Licenses: Valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.

Hours: The regular hours for this position are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Classification and Status: This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position.
