The Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) in the Curry School of Education seeks applicants for multiple Research Specialist (wage) positionsto collect data in kindergarten classrooms in the areas of Suffolk and Newport News Virginia. The P2k Research Specialist (Wage) collects data for the P2K (Understanding the Power of Preschool for Kindergarten Success) project, which explores how children's specific experiences in preschool contribute to their school readiness and kindergarten success. Incumbents conduct observations within pre-kindergarten classrooms and provide assessment of children's academic and self-regulation skills. Duties also include data entry, data uploading, ensuring data integrity, as well as visiting classrooms to distribute and collect parent and teacher consent forms and surveys. Work is approximately 25 hours/week during two 6 to 8-week data collection windows (fall, spring).
A bachelor's degree in Social Science, Education, or a related field is required, as is one year of experience performing direct work with children in either an educational setting or an out-of-school setting such as a summer camp or an after school program. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; strong organization skills and attention to detail; the ability to work effectively with a diverse population are essential. Ability to use and troubleshoot technology is required. In addition, knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word), use of the internet and proficiency with laptops, tablets and/or PCs are required.
Reliable transportation for traveling between schools (mileage reimbursed) is required. Must also be able to attend a one week training session in August or September. Location to be determined.
These are at-will wage positions that do not carry benefits.
