Appointed in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado, this faculty position will oversee clinical operations for one of the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics in Colorado.
The Clinical Director will regularly interact with the Operations Director and Medical Director for the Cohen Clinic at the University of Colorado, and will interface with the Cohen Veterans Network (CVN) central office. The clinical director will be a full-time employee of the clinic, with part of her/his time performing patient-facing clinical work.
Nature of Work:
The Department of Family Medicine provides primary health care, educates medical and psychology students and graduates, conducts research, and engages with communities. This position will serve as Clinic Director of the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, with primary responsibility as lead administrator of the clinic. The Clinic Director will report to the Operations Director, closely collaborate with the Medical Director, and will interface with the Cohen Veterans Network (CVN) central office. The Clinic Director will be a full-time employee of the clinic, with less than a quarter of her/his time performing patient-facing clinical work. This position is contingent on sustained funding.
- Oversee all clinic operations (e.g. clinical care, staffing, training, measurement and evaluation), outreach operations, and case management for the clinic.
- Provide, in coordination with the Medical Director, overall clinical supervision for clinic, including weekly clinical supervision for therapists, crisis management support as needed, and management of a trauma-focused, clinical training program in effective treatment modalities.
- Make day-to-day clinic decisions in line with the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Guidebook and in consultation with the Medical Director, Operations Direct, and Executive Director when necessary.
- Serve as direct supervisor to staff including the electronic health record (EHR) manager, lead clinicians, intake coordinator, IT lead, office administrator, and receptionist.
- Work with the EHR manager to customize and manage the electronic health record.
- Participate in clinical research projects, as appropriate (not required to be a clinician-researcher unless pursuing traditional promotion path).
- Attend and present at conferences, meetings and trainings in order to maintain certification and enhance professional skills; participate in faculty development activities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including diverse interest groups, advocacy groups, and other governmental organizations.
- Develop and foster a culture of collaboration, peer consultation, and commitment to ongoing education and professional improvement.
- On a continuous basis, interpret and evaluate staff reports; know laws, regulations and codes; observe performance and evaluate staff; problem solve clinic related issues; remember various rules; and explain and interpret policy.
- Accepts other responsibilities specifically assigned by the Executive Director.
- Provide evidence-based mental health treatments to Veterans and their families, families of Active Duty Service Members, and Reserve Component Service Members and their families.
- Assess, diagnose and treat behavioral, mental or emotional conditions.
- Facilitate group visits.
- Design and implement health promotion/disease prevention interventions.
- Manage intake process for new patients, including supporting intake workers as needed and leading weekly disposition meetings for the clinical team to assign and present cases.
- Maintains eligibility for School of Medicine Faculty.
- Keeps abreast of the latest developments in field, both academically and through applied skill.
Teaching and Supervision
- Supervise behavioral health trainees (graduate students, psychology interns, post-doctoral fellows, and pre-licensure psychologists).
- Support community partnerships by providing educational talks and training sessions.
- Coach others in communication skills and techniques of health behavior change.
- Facilitate referrals for more significant mental health conditions.
- Lead quality improvement and practice transformation initiatives, workflow modification, and the identification and deployment of new efficiencies.
- Provide team-based care with multidisciplinary teams.
- Master's in Social Work or Nursing (or related degree), Doctoral degree in Psychology (PhD or PsyD), or Medical Degree (MD or DO) with specialty in Psychiatry.
- Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate Colorado state licensure.
- 7+ years' clinical experience in behavioral medicine.
- Experience leading a mental health clinic, demonstrated leadership capacity, and ability to foster team-building and a supportive, flexible environment.
- Highly organized, detail oriented, and reliable.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience treating and diagnosing PTSD as well as co-morbid diagnoses (e.g., SUD, depression, anxiety), with evidence-based treatments and providing clinical supervision in these areas.
- Experience working with Veteran and Military communities to include appropriate cultural competence.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Clinical skill is required for conducting brief and targeted assessments to provide psychotherapy interventions, health and behavior change, substance use treatment, and triage for appropriate level of care.
- Demonstrated skill in supervision of subordinate staff and trainees.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department of Family Medicine and clinic faculty and staff.
- Ability to work effectively on multiple tasks and maintain a well-organized work environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Capacity for flexibility and adaptability in different work situations.
- Ability to work well with diverse populations.
- Experience training and developing staff.
- Analytical skills, professional acumen, business ethics, thorough understanding of continuous improvement processes, problem solving, respect for confidentiality, excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Strong consultative abilities, conflict-resolution skills, and leadership abilities.
- Experience with integrated team-based care, particularly in a primary care based setting.
- Expertise in motivational interviewing, and evidence-based psychotherapies.
- Current Colorado license.
- Experience across a range of modalities beyond individual adult treatment to include child, couples, and family treatment is preferred.
- 5+ years demonstrated progressive experience in leading, managing, and supervising within a clinical setting.
