Location Taylor Fire Academy
Note: Physical Location is 4800 Shaw Ln Austin, TX 78744 Hours 40 hours/week as assigned; Generally Monday though Friday, 8 am - 5 pm Salary Technician 2/116 ($26,978.00 - $38,540.00) FLSA Status Non-Exempt Reports To Department Chair, Supervisor, or designee Criminal Background Check Pre-employment criminal background checks are required for all Staff and Faculty positions. Pre-employment urinalyses drug screens are also required for all top candidates considered for positions in ACC's College Police department.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensures safe laboratory conditions including safe and secure handling and storage of supplies and equipment. May recommend, implement, and maintain safety standards and departmental policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, and local hazardous materials, health and safety, hazardous waste regulations, and other applicable regulations.
  • Organizes, plans, and prioritizes laboratory activities for designated area.
  • May assist students in use of lab equipment and facilities.
  • Performs clerical duties including operating a computer, maintaining records and files, and compiling data and reports as required.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Initiates purchase requisitions, controls expenditures, and prepares cost estimates for budget recommendation; submits justifications and requests for capital outlay items; may prepare specifications and analyze bids for purchases.
  • Operates, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment; sets up, configures, and calibrates new equipment. Performs routine maintenance and repair.
  • Collects data, records, and other information, and submits reports as required.
  • May oversee or delegate related tasks to others as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.

    • General Statement of Job
      To maintain a clean, safe, and orderly lab and/or technical classroom environment and assist faculty and students. Lab area consists of inside and outside training areas for students attending the ACC Firefighter certification program.

      Description of Duties and Tasks
      Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
      1. Performs clerical duties including operating a computer, maintaining records and files, and compiling data and reports as required.
      a. Must maintain documentation of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) assigned to the fire academy in accordance with (IAW) with Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) rules and regulations.
      b. Must maintain documentation of firefighter structural turn-out gear IAW TCFP rules and regulations
      *Failure to adhere to TCFP guidelines could cause accident, injury, or death and/or loss of ACC training certification with TCFP.
      2. Maintains an inventory of supplies and materials
      3. Initiates purchase requisitions and monitors expenditures; may prepare cost estimates for budget recommendation, and/or submit justifications and request for capital outlay items
      4. Operates, installs and maintains equipment.
      5. May set up, configure and/or calibrate new equipment; may perform routine maintenance and repair.
      6. May assist students, or monitor and assist students, faculty, and staff in the use of equipment or facilities

      Additional Job Specific Duties
      1. Ability to maintain mechanical tools and equipment (2 stroke and 4 stroke engines)
      a. Sharpen and change out chain saw blades
      b. Replace circular saw blades on Firefighting Rescue saws
      c. Service Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fans

      2. Operate and maintain small engines (2 stroke and 4 stroke engines)
      a. Change air and fuel filters as required
      b. Change spark plugs as required
      c. Change oil as required

      3. General mechanical aptitude in using power tools and equipment; candidate may use a variety of tools in the job to include but not limited to: compound miter saws, table saws, drills, chainsaws, hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, sockets

      4. Ability to maintain hand tools
      a. Sharpen firefighting axes
      b. Sand and repaint tolls as required
      c. Repair hand tool as required

      5. General knowledge in vehicle maintenance; candidate will be required to maintain vehicle fleet records i.e. oil changes, ensure state inspections are completed, insurance cards, tire pressures, etc. Candidate will be required to complete weekly checks on fluids, tire pressures and tread, fuel and overall status of vehicle. Fleet includes three-Vans, 1-service truck, two-fire engines, bus, and three-trailers.

      6. Operate SCBA cascade system, ability to fill and maintain SCBA bottles for use in firefighting

      7. Perform light maintenance on SCBA equipment/packs/masks; perform function checks on equipment.

      8. Wash and clean SCBA components in compliance with manufacturer's specifications

      9. Wash and clean firefighter turn-out gear and HazMat ensembles in compliance with manufacturer's specifications

      10. Capable of performing light carpentry work, i.e. building shelving systems, potential Firefighting training props, etc...

      11. Perform annual maintenance and repair on firefighting ladders to include 10 foot attic ladders, 12 and 14 foot roof ladders and 24 and 35 foot extension ladders.

      12. Clean and maintain storage facilities and maintenance facility as necessary

      13. Perform other duties as required

    Required Work Experience

    • Two years related work experience.




    Preferred Work Experience

    • Worked in or for the fire service industry




    Required Education

    • High school diploma or educational equivalent.




    Preferred Education

    • TCFP or IFSAC certified Firefighter I & II
      TCFP or IFSAC certified Fire Instructor I
    • TCFP or IFSAC certified Firefighter I & II
      TCFP or IFSAC certified Fire Instructor I




    Special Requirements

    Licenses/Certifications; Other

      • Valid Texas Driver's License and reliable transportation for local Austin area travel.
      • Candidate will be required to obtain a Class B or CDL as required by the state of Texas in order to drive Firefighting Apparatus within one year of hire





    Physical Requirements

    • Work is performed in a variety of settings.
    • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.
    • May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
    • May be exposed to a variety of temperatures, noise, moving mechanical parts, or chemicals.
    • Specific vision abilities may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to focus.




    Other Preferred Qualifications

    • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) experience and/or training
