The University of Virginia's School of Medicine seeks a Research Computing Associate/Computational Scientist. The incumbent acts as a technical resource for UVA School of Medicine faculty and researchers, translating between scientific research needs and computing solutions. The Research Computing Associate/Computational Scientist will develop computational solutions for SOM research projects as well as implement them and train users.
Bachelor's degree in life science, computer science, or related areas. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Three years overall experience in Science and/or IT required, including two years of Linux and HPC platform, is required. A demonstrable level of proficiency with high-level programming languages and Unix/Linux shell scripting is required, as is experience with R, Python and/or Matlab programming for statistical data analysis and/or machine learning. The successful candidate must have extensive knowledge and research experiences with bioinformatics and computational biology tools, broad knowledge of computer science, IT technology trends, and the ability to effectively apply the knowledge to UVA's HPC & Cloud environment. Must also have the ability to learn new technologies quickly and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
The preferred candidate will have an advanced degree in life science, computer science, or a related discipline. Experience with high-performance computing systems and its software environment is also preferred. Preference will be given to individuals who have: knowledge and experiences in Cloud solution development for life science applications using AWS, GCP and/or Azure; experience with cluster software stack management (application layer); experience with SQL-based RDBMS system; image analysis & visualization programming experience; and/or user training experience in computational science and bioinformatics.
This position is restricted and contingent upon the continuation of funding.
