The Department of Chemistry seeks a full-time (12-month) academic professional as a Financial Analyst. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Finance & Administration in the Chemistry Administration Office and will provide financial oversight, reporting, and analysis for the Department of Chemistry.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Financial oversight of 700+ accounts in the department. Includes; state, ICR, self-supporting, federal and private grants, and gift/endowment funds.
Closely review endowment accounts, offering guidance to Assistant Director regarding investment options and expenditure levels. Includes managing the use of scholarship and fellowship funds.
Assist Department Head and Assistant Director with devising strategies to handle faculty research accounts, manage short-term deficits, ICR restructuring, and start-up funding for faculty.
Track and analyze departmental expenditures, offering cost savings suggestions and funding strategies.
Assist with reviewing and updating all departmental employee records in the Campus Activity Reporting System (ARS), with particular emphasis on research effort and departmental cost sharing.
Gather and report financial and academic data to assist departmental administration with internal and external reporting.
Formulate summer instructional budget requests.
Oversee departmental expenditure approvals via the Travel and Expense Management (TEM) system and other internal purchasing systems.
Oversee operations in the Chemistry Head Office in the absence of the Assistant Director. Includes temporary supervision of office staff.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, or related field
Two years professional experience in a University business environment.
Experience in financial analysis and budgeting.
Thorough knowledge of University operational procedures and accounting systems.
Extensive knowledge of PC-based tools including Word, Excel and database applications.
Motivation to seek continuing education opportunities or relevant professional certifications.
Knowledge of expenditure allowability on specific fund types, departmental and campus policies, and funding availability.
Preferred: Experience internal to the University of Illinois.
Expertise in compliance regulations surrounding campus, state, federal, and industrial financial support, knowledge of applicable accounting and auditing principles
Salary and Start Date: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting date is as soon as possible after closing date.
