About the Position
The Production Chief independently performs highly technical production activities leading to the publication of a daily newspaper. This position supervises student assistants and supports and assists enrolled student staff members and faculty advisers from all newspaper departments in production activities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
-Ensure that correct daily print order has been submitted to the printing contractor, and verify that any errors are resolved before deadline.
-Assemble newspaper pages in digital format each evening prior to deadline and transmit pages via FTP (file transfer protocol) for electronic delivery to print contractor's pre-press department. Assembly includes proper preparation and placement of scheduled advertisements, copy, photographs. Collect all images and fonts in a package folder then convert their page documents to an EPS (encapsulated postscript) format, and place the "package folder" and EPS on a server with a pre-designated label that's indicates date and page number.
-Convert the EPS to a PDF using standards set by the printing contractor then transmit each page individually from the server to the pre-press FTP site.
-In cooperation with appropriate faculty adviser design an efficient work flow system that integrates advertising, reporting, editing, and photojournalism.
-Assist in training student staff members to properly utilize the designed work flow system for a timely quality driven newspaper and web site.
-Enforce established deadlines and arrange special deadlines and deadline alterations in collaboration with fiscal adviser and appropriate publication adviser(s).
-Maintain equipment and software integrity and guide supervised employees and student staff members in the use of facilities.
-Trouble-shoot and, if possible, correct minor equipment problems to include computers, printers, servers and software dealing with production of the newspaper; or, if more appropriate, schedule a technician's visit.
-Maintain, order, and secure production, archiving and multi-media supplies and equipment. Technical issues may require you to schedule a technician's visit. Describe the problem, the location of the equipment then follow up with a solution.
-Arrange work schedules and report payroll information for student assistants who may be working under position supervision.
