Stanford Law School is seeking applications for a newly created Reference Librarian position in the Robert Crown Law Library. Librarians who are interested in joining an outstanding team supporting world-class research and teaching through a combination of traditional and new collections and services are encouraged to apply.

Working under the supervision of the Head of Public Services, SLS reference librarians are responsible for providing premier-level reference service and research instruction. Our reference librarians receive an array of requests for assistance from our faculty and students. The reference team collaborates on a wide range of academic projects and instructional resources, including sophisticated, in-depth research supporting faculty scholarship.

The reference librarians are actively engaged in teaching, and comprise the core of the legal research instruction to first year students. Reference librarians may also teach advanced research courses. Advanced research training is also offered in a variety of formats, often in small group presentations to doctrinal and clinic courses.

Other duties include: participation in the evaluation and selection of information resources; creating, editing, and publishing bibliographies, guides, web pages, and library displays to engage our users in furtherance of the law library's research mission. Reference librarians are encouraged and supported to seek opportunities for professional growth and education evolvement, both here in the education-rich Bay Area and nationally.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • JD required; Master's degree from an ALA-accredited school of library and/or information studies strongly preferred;
  • Candidates must have knowledge of basic legal research sources and be skilled at using all manner of research materials;
  • Candidates with 1-2 years relevant experience, including legal practice or teaching experience, will receive preferred consideration; Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language also preferred;
  • Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies;
  • Proficiency in using the latest digital resources;
  • A very strong service ethic, and the ability to blend harmoniously with colleagues and the law school and university communities;
  • A commitment to continuous service improvement and innovation;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, within a collegial environment;
  • Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • An aptitude for and interest in project planning and management, as well as excellent organizational, time-management, and analytical skills;
  • Must possess an agile and curious mind, along with a healthy sense of humor and a spirit of idealism about our chosen profession.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work extended hours, evenings and weekends.
