We are currently seeking a Sign Language Interpreter V who will advance the institution's proud tradition of excellence in academics, student life and community service.

Your mission: We'll count on you to provide direct interpretation which will aid in providing the highest quality of interpreting/transliterating services. This will include assignment preparation, consumer relations, and professional development.

Your work: Highlights In this role, you'll be interpreting/transliterating for College functions, higher level academic classes, lectures, student activity events, and other special events as needed where receptive interpreting would be required. You'll prepare for assignments by reviewing notes and course outline, previewing required texts and course materials, and speaking with faculty, speaker, and/or students; work cooperatively with department staff, faculty, college staff, students, and administrators; and assessing the language or communication modes of the customers served. You'll work collaboratively with department staff, faculty, college staff, students and administrators.

SUMMARY

Provide direct interpretation and duties which will aid in providing the highest quality of interpreting/transliterating services; including but not limited to: assignment preparation, consumer relations, and professional development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Interpret/transliterate for College functions, higher level academic classes, lectures, student activity events, and other special events as needed where receptive interpreting would be required.

Prepare for assignments by reviewing notes and course outline, previewing required texts and course materials, and speaking with faculty, speaker, and/or students.

Work cooperatively with department staff, faculty, college staff, students, and administrators.

Meet regularly with assigned supervisor to review evaluations from consumers and supervisor for continuous improvement/professional development activities.

Assess language or communication modes of consumers served.

Serve as mentor to other interpreters and/or interns.

Provide training to HCC interpreters at the discretion of the assigned supervisor.

Demonstrate continuous professional development by upgrading interpreting skills, developing specialized content expertise, and enhancing interpersonal communication skills through participation in continuing education, in-service training, and related educational opportunities.

Participate in projects, including committee work and mentoring, as deemed appropriate by the assigned supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION

AAS degree in Interpreting required.

High school diploma or GED and four (4) years directly related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.

Hold Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Certification Master or Court, National Interpreter Certification Level Master, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certification SC:L.

EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years related work experience required.

Experience working in a college or university setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Must be available to accept interpreting assignments at alternative sites as needed

Demonstrate knowledge and practice of the Texas BEI/RID Code of Professional Conduct and Deaf Culture

Reliable transportation and able to travel to assignments as needed
