Rowan University is a public comprehensive state-designated research institution with approximately 17,300 students. The Public Services Librarian for the Sciences will have instructional, reference and collection development responsibilities within Campbell Library; and will build partnerships and collaborations across Rowan University as liaison to the departments of Biological Sciences, Translational Biomedical Science, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Health & Exercise Science.

This tenure track position will report to the Director of Public Services and serve as a member of the Research and Instructional Services Department. The successful candidate for this position may be hired at the rank of Librarian III or Librarian II depending on qualifications.

The librarian in this position will:

  • Design and deliver a dynamic reference and instruction program for the sciences that emphasizes the integration of digital resources, promotes inquiry and critical thinking, and strives to produce information literate and technically proficient self-directed learners
  • Actively build partnerships with faculty and library colleagues to develop programs and services that support research and scholarship in the life sciences
  • Carry out collection management responsibilities for assigned departments and programs in the sciences
  • Develop web-based research guides, instructional materials, and web pages to help users in science research
  • Work as part of the public services team at Campbell Library in the delivery of classroom based library instruction and individual research support for students and faculty, including participation in the reference desk schedule
  • Partner with librarians across the multi-campus environment: Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RUSOM) and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU)
  • Serve on library committees, represent the library on university committees, and participate in consortium, state, regional and national activities of relevant organizations
  • Pursue appropriate presentation and publication opportunities expected for a library faculty member on the tenure track
  • Carry out special projects or serve on ad hoc committees at the request of the Director of Public Services

  • Qualifications:


    • Master’s degree in library and information science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA accredited program (or ALA recognized foreign equivalent) by the time employment commences.

  • Commitment to excellent customer service in a user centered environment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and actively participate in a team
  • Understanding of key issues and trends in public services in academic libraries, and in higher education
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional responsibilities as the needs of the library grow
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Preferred:

  • Experience designing and teaching information literacy sessions, or other relevant teaching experience
  • Work experience or coursework in the sciences or a health profession
  • Knowledge of science information resources such as Web of Science, SciFinder Scholar, PubMed and CINAHL
  • Experience providing academic or special library reference assistance
