Job Description Summary

Willamette University is accepting applications for a full time, live-in, position of Area Coordinator within Housing and Community Life within the division of Campus Life.

Reporting to Director of Housing and Community Life (H&CL) the Area Coordinator will assume responsibility for the overall operation of one to seven residence halls or apartment buildings (280-390 students) and a functional area such as coordination of the First-Year Commons, student-staff recruitment, selection, training, and evaluations with RHA advising, or campus-wide programming. Provide direction to build communities that are promote academic success and are culturally rich, socially robust, and inclusive. Assist in the development of residential procedures and programs that support the mission a liberal arts education.

Work involves a variety of duties and responsibilities in administration of the Residence Life program. Because primary functions of the position include programming, advising student groups and to responding to student emergencies after normal working hours, it is a live-in position requiring significant evening and weekend availability. The position requires a high degree of interpersonal and communication skills for most areas of responsibility (supervision of staff, advising students, crisis intervention, and conduct hearings). The position also requires use of master keys and access to confidential information regarding students. As most work is performed indoors, incumbent has minimal exposure to hazards or adverse environmental conditions. However, special activities may require incumbent to operate outdoors and experience inclement conditions. Supervises several student staff members.

Compensation:
$31,096 annual salary; includes room and board.

Duties & Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following functions which, are not listed in any particular order of importance or significance:

Community Development
1. Provides leadership for staff and students in developing communities which:
  • support students' personal, academic, and social development,
  • respect the rights of others and promote multicultural understanding and consideration of individual needs in a group living environment,
  • promote responsible citizenship and development of leadership and personal life skills.
    2. Maintains visibility in the community by regularly interacting with residents, attending programs, visiting staff and residents in their rooms, and eating meals in the campus dining facility, etc.
    3. Advises hall councils and assists in the development of the concepts of self-governance and community participation. Meets regularly with student leaders.

    Supervision
    1. Supervises eight to thirteen Resident Assistants and indirectly assists in supervising the remaining Housing student staff. Meets weekly with student staff as a group and at least bi-weekly with individual student staff members. Provides on-going feedback to student staff.
    2. Provides the resources, guidance, and support necessary for staff to be successful in their positions. Provides for on-going student staff development opportunities.
    3. Establish a sense of unity and teamwork among the student staff members. Provides team-building opportunities to promote good staff relations.
    4. Coaches inadequate performance and, when necessary, terminates the appointment of any student staff member (in cooperation with the Director of H&CL).

    Programming
    1. Along with residents and other staff, develops and implements regular educational, social, and recreational programs and activities tied back to department goals. Promotes student-faculty contacts. Coordinates the programming within the complex.
    2. Supports staff in programming efforts through training, attendance, resources, and guidance.

    Advising and Referral of Students
    1. Be available, approachable and responsive to students. Advises and refers individual students and groups regarding personal and academic needs and University/Housing procedures.
    2. Mediates conflicts between students or staff as necessary.

    Student Conduct
    1. Promotes student rights and responsibilities through the fair and consistent administration of the University code of conduct, policies, and procedures.
    2. Serves as Hearing officer for assigned area. Includes conducting Administrative Hearings and writing related conduct letters. Serves as advisor to a conduct board.
    3. Oversees student staff responsibilities in communication of community expectations of students and response to behavioral issues.

    General Program Administration
    1. Coordinates, in conjunction with other Area Coordinators, a special assignment during the academic year such as advising the Residential Hall Association, student staff selection, or student staff training.
    2. Facilitates room change requests in coordination with H&CL and collaborates with colleagues for a cross-area room change requests and moves.
    3. Collaborate with the H&CL annual housing selection/placement process and participates in the all-campus assignments.
    4. Communicates departmental needs and instructions to staff and students. Solicits staff and student input in decision making, as appropriate. Facilitates effective communication between all staff and students.
    5. Keeps supervisor informed regarding hall activities, staff efforts, and student concerns. Updates staff on administrative issues that are relevant to residents - safety, assignments, maintenance, housekeeping, etc.
    6. Shares responsibility with other live-in administrative staff for responding to medical, safety, and security emergency needs and to students experiencing personal crises after hours. Works with and refers to appropriate campus services. Along with other live-in administrative staff, provides on-call coverage when any residential facility is occupied.
    7. Executes assigned administrative tasks thoroughly and promptly.
    8. Coordinates area staff efforts to achieve departmental goals and administrative tasks in a timely manner.
    9. Maintains harmonious working relationships with students, faculty and other University staff.
    10. Implements procedures outlined in Housing and Community Life staff manual. Along with other professional staff, updates the manual.
    11. Attends weekly staff meetings with other H&CL professional staff. Meets weekly with supervisor.
    12. Effectively manages financial accounts. Disperses departmental monies responsibly and prudently.
    13. Safeguards the confidentiality of discussions with students and of departmental administration by exercising discretion in communication and handling of all confidential information and materials.

    Additional Responsibilities of the Area Coordinator
    1. Assists in overall administration of the housing program. Assists in development and evaluation of departmental policies, procedures, and goals.
    2. In cooperation with the Director of H&CL, develops and presents student staff training sessions and other developmental meetings for the student staff.
    3. Orients incoming Willamette and Tokyo International University of America students to the hall and campus. Provides programs and activities which supports cross-cultural understanding.
    4. Educates staff and residents on safety and security concerns and appropriate emergency response procedures.
    5. Reports unsafe conditions, damage and other facilities issues to appropriate University staff.
    6. Represents H&CL on University committees as needed. Provides leadership for committees and/or special projects as determined.
    7. Assumes other duties as assigned by the Director of H&CL.

    Required Qualifications
    1. A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree in Student Personnel or related discipline is preferred.
    2. One year of residential staff experience is required; two years residential staff experience is preferred.
    3. Experience with student staff supervision within residential commons/colleges or First Year Experience is required.
    4. Possess a sound background in student/human development theory. Ability to articulate philosophy of residential life programs. Committed to expanding knowledge and understanding of student development and social awareness issues (e.g. alcohol and other drugs, sexual harassment and assault, gender issues, international and multicultural issues, eating disorders, mental health, etc.) and ability to promote and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures and backgrounds.
    5. Commitment to social justice, inclusion and equity with experience in providing support and advocacy for diverse communities (includes but not limited to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, and socioeconomic status.)
    6. Ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely. Ability to model open, direct, and honest communication. Possess well-developed assertion and intervention skills.
    7. Possess interpersonal and counseling skills. Possess excellent basic helping skills and displays empathy and regard for other's concerns. Ability to demonstrate sensitively to the diversity of individuals' needs, backgrounds, life and work styles. Ability to practice a developmental approach to behavioral problems. Ability to develop strong rapport.
    8. Ability to successfully facilitate student groups of various sizes. Teach students and staff skills necessary to be effective leaders.     9. Ability to develop, motivate, coach, and maintain a student staff team in order to meet departmental goals effectively. Ability to provide support while holding student staff accountable.
    10. Ability to function competently under pressure and effectively diffuses crisis situations. Ability to demonstrate sound judgment.
    11. Ability to manage time and tasks to accomplish responsibilities in a timely manner. Ability to work independently as well as accept direction.
    12. Ability to pay attention to details and to track operational processes key to housing on a university campus, including but not limited to, facility and maintenance issues, contractual language, and administrative processes.
    13. Ability to advise students in programming and present needed recreational, social or educational programs. Ability to be an effective designer and presenter of programs.
    14. Desirable training in any specialized areas pertinent to higher education (e.g. leadership development, alcohol education, multicultural education, community service, counseling, etc.).
    15. This position is subject to a criminal conviction record check.

    Preferred Qualifications
    1. Master's degree in Student Personnel or related discipline.
