The Princeton Environmental Institute (PEI) seeking a highly competent and creative Web Developer and Web/Graphic Designer to further the development and maintenance of PEI's family of websites and to enhance communication with faculty, staff, students, prospective students and others with an interest in environmental research and teaching. PEI is the interdisciplinary center of environmental research, education and outreach at Princeton University with 120 associated faculty members, representing 27 academic disciplines.
Reporting to the Manager of Communications, this position will play a key role in shaping and communicating PEI news, information and events through various platforms. Applicants must apply online and submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae.
Selected candidates will undergo a phone screening to determine technical qualifications, followed by in-person interviews with PEI administrators and staff.
The Web Developer and Web/Graphic Designer will be expected to:
- Work with the Manager of Communications and other PEI program managers to develop, maintain and update the PEI site and the sites of related programs, including:
- the Environmental Studies Program (ENV);
- the Carbon Mitigation Initiative (CMI);
- the Climate Futures Initiative (CFI); and
- the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling project (SOCCOM).
- Manage all back-end aspects of PEI-hosted sites, including coding, design, maintenance, updates and administration of websites using Drupal and cPanel.
- Implement and monitor security of the websites, while working closely with Princeton's Office of Information Technology.
- Creatively and efficiently design graphic content for communications and promotional materials, including event posters and programs, news and feature stories, brochures, donor and annual reports, and presentation materials.
- Conduct light server administration and patching.
- Develop web content and information that is compliant with university Accessibility standards.
- Format communications materials for distribution, including layout of the PEI monthly newsletter, and scaling event posters for use email blasts and ad copy for various publications.
- Work with the Manager of Communications to develop and implement a strategy for regularly updating and providing unique content for social media, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
- Photograph events for use on the PEI website and in promotional materials, as well as filming lectures upon request and posting the videos to YouTube, the PEI video site and other media sources.
- Create and maintain a large photographic archive for use in promotional materials and news.
- Take full advantage of training opportunities provided by the Support for Computing in Academic Departments/Department Computing Support (SCAD/DCS) program.
- Attend monthly SCAD/DCS meetings, trainings and events including but not limited to SCAD Breakfast meetings, Monthly SCAD/DCS Meetings, and Monthly SDST Meetings.
- Manage the PEI Guyot Hall TV.
- Keep current on new technologies to enhance communications, end-user functionality and ease of use.
- Bachelor's degree with at least 2 years of experience, or at least 4 years of equivalent experience.
- Comprehensive experience in website design and development and content management, particularly Drupal, including web-based integration, multiple-database platforms, cross-browser compatibility and script implementation.
- Experience with database administration to design and maintain MySQL and other relational databases.
- Familiarity with Adobe software, including Acrobat Professional and Photoshop.
- Familiarity with social media, particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and the ability to help develop and implement a strategy applicable to an academic organization.
- Experience in photography and ability to produce photos for the web and publications.
- Experience with creating and embedding YouTube videos.
- Advanced expertise with Google Analytics, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to independently manage time and balance priorities, while also working in a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work efficiently on multiple projects in a fast-moving, deadline-driven environment with attention to detail and flexibility to respond to shifting priorities.
- Prior work experience/familiarity with University applications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of effective website design/development from both the server and client perspectives including site architecture, section 508/ADA compliance requirements, usability testing, search engine optimization and statistical analysis.
- Familiarity with continuous integration; ability to work from and maintain existing code bases; and adhere to web standards.
- Ability to work across platforms on multi-operating systems including Windows and Macintosh.
