Responsibilities

Academic advising at Marymount University involves assessing student needs, goals and interests in order to guide students to complete their first year of college successfully and transition to a faculty advisor in their major field.

Advisors collaborate with faculty members and professional staff to coordinate programs and activities that address the needs of individuals or groups of students.

Advisors are also responsible for understanding and interpreting the College's policies and academic options of all degree and certificate programs to help facilitate the student's academic success.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree required.
  • 2 to 4 years of related experience with college students or young adults in an academic or counseling capacity
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in helping students transition from high school into a traditional 4-year college program.


Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Communication, English, Liberal Arts.

Job Duties

Responsibility / Duty

Works closely with the admissions and financial aid staff to advise new first college students e.g., makes contact with students upon deposit, participates in summer orientation, builds schedules and makes referrals to appropriate services.

Percent of total time 35

Responsibility / Duty

  • Provides academic advising to new first year students, individually or in groups, including Liberal Arts core requirements, inquiry learning, programs of study and degree options.
  • Provides students with information about alternatives and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Tracks student progress and intervenes proactively to promote student success.
  • Works closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning staff to provide academic support (e.g., tutoring, referrals to Student Access Services).

Responsibility / Duty

Coordinates with career services staff on career and major exploration activities and helps first year students develop preliminary career options.

Percent of total time 10

Responsibility / Duty

Maintains relationships with assigned Department Chair/Program Directors and Associate Deans to understand and clarify departmental and School expectations.

Percent of total time 10

Responsibility / Duty

Facilitates the transition to departmental faculty advising at the end of the second semester; supports the development of strong connections between students and their department and School.

Completes other advising duties as requested.
