The Chief Nurse Executive of UHealth develops and directs the overall nursing activities for the University of Miami Health System, which is comprised of inpatient and outpatient facilities. Key responsibilities include oversight, coordination and evaluation of all UHealth nursing services, across multiple sites, in order to ensure quality nursing practice, continuous improvement, consistent standards and policies that are in accordance with the vision, mission and all applicable laws, regulatory and accreditation requirements.

List of responsibilities: Serves as a leader for operations and success of the patient care units, to include the care delivery model, continuing education, standards of care, policies and procedures. Develops and implements the overall UHealth nursing strategic plan consistent with system policies and objectives, in order to provide continuous nursing care and services. Engages senior executives in the assessment and development of the nursing strategy, patient care models and system-wide execution. Works collaboratively with all medical staff and other stakeholders in the identification and fulfillment of quality improvement action plans for clinical effectiveness, development of new patient care programs and resolution of patient concerns related to care. Ensures measurement and maintenance of quality nursing care, to include timelines, resource requirements in order to improve the organization’s overall delivery of patient care, utilization, and drive patient satisfaction. Prepares master nursing services staffing plan. Oversees the management of the overall nursing services budget and expense control efforts. Applies financial planning methodologies and aligns project and capital budgeting with strategic objectives. Participates in organization wide goal setting, communicates organization wide objectives and keeps the division focused on organizational objectives. Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of the UHealth system quality assurance and improvement program through evaluation of services rendered, quality improvement, audit of medical records, patient visits and hospital rounding. Maintains communications with executive team, medical and administrative staff through participation in regularly scheduled staff meetings and involvement in UHealth system committees. Evaluates short and long-range equipment needs and supply requirements for nursing care by forecasting service levels and quantity of materials available. Directs the creation of educational programs to promote nursing staff training and development. Creates and facilitates a learning environment and atmosphere of participative management within the framework of shared governance and shared decision-making. Promotes a culture in practice to assure the Hospital mission of a Patient First environment, enhances productivity and job satisfaction. Leads and oversees all patient care services management. Directs and delegates the development of nursing policy, procedures and standards, establishing objectives, determining methods for achieving objectives and evaluating outcomes.


Master’s Degree in Nursing, Health Services or related area.

Certification and Licensing:

Licensed Registered Nurse


Minimum 10 years senior healthcare leadership, in a large healthcare organization, demonstrating an understanding of the continuum of healthcare and the contemporary models of quality improvement; Minimum 3 years of CNO experience preferred. Prior experience in Joint Commission preparation and survey process helpful.
