The University of Mary invites applications for a part-time, 9 month exempt Graduate Assistant Residence Director. Residing in private living quarters in the residence hall, the Graduate Assistant Residence Director works under the supervision and direction of the Residence Director (RD) to create and maintain a culture in the residence hall that edifies the university’s Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine mission, identity, and values and to implement a unique residence life program designed to address the formative needs of residents as a part of the University of Mary’s Education for Life student experience. The Graduate Assistant Residence Director serves as a role model and accessible servant leader who listens and responds to student needs and concerns and provides substantial leadership to actively engage the participation of student residents in developing a vibrant residential community to welcome new students to the university, encourage friendships among the residents, support learning in and outside the classroom, encourage each student to grow in faith, avoid negative and destructive activities, become involved in campus life, and serve others. The appointee assumes substantial leadership for programming in the residence hall and for many of the daily administrative functions of the residence hall.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Works under the direction and supervision of the RD to implement a successful residence life program designed to meet the formative needs of residents and to create and maintain a student culture that is consistent with the university’s mission, values, and Education for Life student experience
  • Serves as an active role model who builds community and facilitates the formation of friendships among residents by spending time with residents in the residence hall, leading creative programs and activities, and sharing meals with residents in the dining center
  • Assumes substantial responsibility for developing and implementing creative programming designed to engage residents
  • Assists the RD with monitoring the adjustment and progress of residents, identifying students at risk for attrition, and connecting students with the Student Success Center and other university services
  • Assists the RD with the implementation of an effective program to educate residents about the university’s community standards and policies and ensure effective enforcement of community standards through timely documentation of violations and administration of the student conduct process
  • Assists the RD with administrative processes as assigned to ensure proper implementation of established procedures including responses to roommate conflicts, requests for changes in room and roommate assignments, resident check-ins and check-outs, and all safety and security procedures
  • Assists with the university’s program to recruit new students
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate professional boundaries in relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Attends staff meetings and meetings with supervisors as scheduled
  • Provides on-call coverage to respond to crisis situations, emergencies, and other needs according to a schedule determined by supervisors
  • Serves as a member of the corporate faculty and on university councils, committees, and task forces as assigned
  • Maintains professional standards for privacy and confidentiality of student records and student information
  • Assists with the recruitment and training of student leaders to serve as resident assistants
  • Maintains office hours and on-duty hours within the residence hall according to a schedule approved by the supervisor
  • Upholds and promotes the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary
  • Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Student Development and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ

Qualifications Include:

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Two years of experience as a student serving as a resident assistant (or the equivalent) in a college/university setting (other experience as a student or at the professional level that is closely related to the position responsibilities may be substituted
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for admission to Graduate Studies at the University of Mary
  • Must support higher education in a Benedictine tradition

Graduate Assistant positions also include:

  • Graduate Tuition waiver

  • Housing for one bed within an apartment located in Boyle or Deichert Hall

Knowledge and Skills Include:

  • Ability to demonstrate a working understanding of how the residence life program can be structured to address the formative and developmental needs of students within the context of the University of Mary’s Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine identity and mission
  • Ability to serve as an effective leader, role model, and mentor of the university’s mission and values
  • Ability to plan and successfully execute residence life programming
  • Ability to remain calm and provide leadership in an emergency/crisis situation
  • Ability to work flexible hours and adjust his/her schedule with little or no advance notice
  • Ability to communicate effectively and prepare professional reports, documentation, and presentations using computers, projectors, and other electronic tools
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications
