Western Art I and II
The Undergraduate School
Location: Washington, DC
University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach Western Art I and II. Specifically, we are seeking faculty for the following courses:
History of Western Art I (ARTH 372)
(Formerly ARTH 370.) A survey of the development of the Western tradition of visual art in its various forms that examines and compares the expression of cultural and aesthetic values in different parts of the Western world from prehistory through the Middle Ages. The objective is to apply principles of visual literacy; describe, analyze, and contextualize content and elements of art; and differentiate historic periods and styles of art.
History of Western Art II (ARTH 373)
(Formerly ARTH 371.) A survey of the development of visual art of the Western world in its various forms that examines and compares the expression of cultural and aesthetic values in Europe and the United States from 1300 to the present day. The aim is to apply principles of visual literacy; describe, analyze, and contextualize content and elements of art; and differentiate historic periods and styles of art.
Required Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
- Professional experience in Art.

- Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred.
- This position is specifically to teach in Washington, DC.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Terminal degree (Ph.D, Ed.D., etc.) from a regionally accredited institution.
- Experience teaching adult learners and distance education is highly preferred.

The Adjunct Faculty Role at UMUC

- Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
- Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
- Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
- Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements.
