The Communications Specialist will report to the Associate Director of Development Services in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations (ODAR) to ensure smooth operation and implementation of development services functions. The Development Communications Specialist will collaborate directly with additional NSOE offices, development staff, volunteers and academic leadership at the Nicholas School as well as with colleagues in Duke University's Central Development office and Duke's other schools and units.
Communications and Social Media
Working with the Associate Director of Development Services, assist in the planning and coordination of the yearly communication plan.
Independently manage newsletters for donor and alumni constituents. This includes identifying and recommending relevant content, writing and editing newsletter articles, designing and editing newsletter template designs on iContact platform and updating and maintaining affiliated WordPress site content. In addition to design and content management, maintain and update recipient data adhering to Alumni and Development Policies (ADR) and generate reports for colleagues as required.
In collaboration with ODAR and colleagues NSOE Marketing and Communications, responsible for managing ODAR website and social media content. This includes but is not limited to, drafting relevant articles, sourcing appropriate images and ensure content is refreshed frequently and is managed as part of the over ODAR communications plan.
Work with the ODAR team to manage communications for annual fund, alumni affairs and other special projects. Responsible for managing all elements of a project including desired deliverables, aesthetics, content and target audience. This may include but is not limited to the design or modification of existing materials using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and generating appropriate data to ensure relevant distribution of materials. Work with contractors and vendors to attain desired projects deliverables. Be proficient in managing multiple projects simultaneously to ensure all deadlines are met.
Manage daily social media posting (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) to promote programs, achievements and highlights relevant course affiliates and topics of interest to a variety of audiences.
Keep current department image bank to help develop content for all promotional materials. Research and expand target audiences using professional listservs, appropriate social media tags, and identifying other relevant audiences to promote courses.
Assist with other promotional needs as required. The planning and distribution of all projects will be scheduled in conjunction with NSOE and ODAR communications.
Working with the Associate Director of Development Services, assist in the planning and coordination of the yearly stewardship plan.
Responsible for the weekly processing of acknowledgment letters and other stewardship activity. This includes but is not limited writing and editing copy for stewardship activities, independently manage and process data, draft appropriate support materials for donor, prospect, and staff follow-up including well written thank you letters, stewardship reports and proposals. Draft and edit copy for stewardship materials, generate appropriate mail merges and prepare materials for mail and email distribution as needed.
In collaboration with colleagues in NSOE student services department, manage stewardship for student scholarship program. Maintain relationships with student participants throughout their participation in the program to gather content for donor stewardship reports. Design and produce appropriate reports/updates and distribute to donors.
Keep up to date existing stewardship materials including but not limited to donor plaques, birthday cards, special projects and provide excellent customer service and support to donors and prospects associated with projects.
Maintain prospect data in DADD database, department database and other worksheets as required. This includes; but is not limited to accurately updating biographical information, handling enquiries across multiple departments as needed, requesting and maintaining tracking codes for mailings and other needs as they arise.

Work requires communication and marketing skills normally acquired through a bachelor's degree in a related field.
