TARGETED SEARCH for Zach Newman - The candidate will work to develop highly miniaturized cold atom systems for use in accurate timing and inertial navigation. These systems will be fabricated from silicon and glass and will use a variety of pumping mechanisms including passive getter pumps, micro fabricated active ion pumps. The candidate will design, construct and test such systems, characterize them in terms of cold atom number and lifetime and work toward their use in accurate clocks and atom interferometer inertial sensors.
