Bachelor degree in English, Journalism, Marketing, Communication, or Public Relations; and 3 years related experience.
Purpose of Job
The Staff Writer will be working with the Media and Communications Unit to develop and manage all communications designed to support our marketing initiatives, including press releases, brochures, media advisories, annual reports, and oversight of the School’s main publications, i.e., Fertile Ground, The Voice, as well as other marketing materials.
Scope of Responsibilities
The Staff Writer is responsible for managing the breadth and depth of the Land Grant Communications news and feature writing function and will serve as the lead writer.
Essential Job Functions
Collaborate with the Director of Media and Communications to ensure that all communications related to the School of Agriculture & Applied Sciences, its reputation, messages, and top-priority initiatives are well written, communicated, and promoted.
As assigned, assists employees throughout the School of Agriculture & Applied Sciences with strategic communications.
Interact with the School of Agriculture & Applied Sciences employees most commonly in a) brainstorming sessions to decide what direction a communication project should take, b) interviews that serve as a basis for news and feature stories, c) inquiries and final editing negotiations to ensure published pieces are accurate and on point.
Other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in print journalism, English, public relations, or related field is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in addition to coursework toward a Master’s degree is acceptable . Minimum of 5 years of experience as a news reporter, in communications, marketing, public relations, or media environment required; experience in an academic environment preferred.

Strong planning and organizational skills, including a keen attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines is required.
Ability to write clearly, creatively, and persuasively on a wide variety of subjects related to the field of agriculture and applied sciences, using journalistic norms and skills.
Experience in research and writing, both independently and in collaboration with others is necessary.
Must have the ability to interpret and organize complex information into understandable copy for the average reader.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines is required.
Ability to think abstractly and conceptually is essential.
Be knowledgeable in the use of camera equipment.
Familiarity with the Associated Press writing style is required.
Significant professional experience (minimum of 5 years) as a writer or editor with excellent skills in feature/news writing, grammar, editing, copyediting and proofreading is required.
