CAREER SPECIALIST


The Career Specialist will be primarily responsible for individual and group counseling, workshop delivery, and coordination of a University-wide summer internship program. Position requires expertise in Microsoft Excel, Qualtrics survey software, and basic data analytics; strong written and oral communication; and keen attention to detail and deadlines.

This is a full-time position with funding through May 31, 2018.

Organizational Overview

The Career Specialist is a full-time position within the Nicholas School of the Environment's Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) reporting to the Director of Career and Professional Programming and Counseling. CPDC is within the Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE)'s Student Services Office.

The Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE)'s Student Services Office consists of an on-campus Master of Environmental Management (MEM) and Master of Forestry (MF) degree programs, a distance learning MEM program (DEL-MEM) for mid-career professionals, executive education short courses, and the Career & Professional Development Center. This department supports all day-to-day operations for approximately 350 students and periodic cohorts of visiting non-matriculated students participating in executive education courses.

Work Performed

70% Use expertise in career preparation to provide individual and group student counseling and deliver career readiness workshops. Provide constructive feedback on resumes, cover letters, and online professional presence. Support students in developing and implementing internship search strategies.

25% Report to Assistant Director of CPDC to coordinate University-wide Stanback Internship Program, including ongoing communication with students and employers about program requirements, processes, and timelines; posting and tracking of internship positions; applicant tracking and placement confirmation; and coordination of Stanback Interview Day. Assist in the preparation of program reports.

5% Support and participate in a wide variety of CPDC and broader Student Services Office events and programs.

This position will require frequent evening and occasional weekend work.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.


Experience:Work requires one year of experience in a placement or other student services function to become familiar with career counseling and placement programs.
Preferred Qualifications

Education/Training: Master's degree in counseling or environmental field.

Experience: Demonstrated experience providing effective career coaching, including international student populations.
