Ph.D. in physics with specialization in experimental atomic and laser physics in hand by October 1, 2017. Must have familiarity with cold neutral plasmas, laser cooling tuning and locking lasers to atomic frequencies., use of frequency combs, use of Ti:Sapph lasers and frequency doubling their outputs, fast photomultiplier detectors data acquisition, simulation methods.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in optics and electromagnetic theory.


Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator in the department of Physics and Astronomy with lab research at the Postdoctral level on the use of STIRAP to populate Rydberg states of helium atoms. Manage two Ti: Sapph laser systems, vacuum systems, electric field apparatus, metastable and ion detectors. The candidate must be able to lock a laser's frequency to an atomic standard and to a Fabry-Perot Standard. They must know how o use a frequency comp, and be familiar with detectors, especially MCP's and PMT's. Must have programming capabilities at a high level for two distinct kinds of tasks: 1). Simulations, 2). data analysis. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.

Align and tune Ti:Sapph lasers, and use frequency doubling system to convert Ti: Sapph light to uv, and lock the laser's frequency to an atomic standard and to a Fabry-Perot standard Control, Maintain and otherwise manage vacuum systems along with a laser colling and atom trapping and cold neutral plasmas Use a frequency comb. Work with detectors, especially MCP's and PMT's Programming high level simulation and data analysis Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings. Special Notes: The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
