Position Summary

MSU Denver’s Administration Branch is seeking a Director of Facilities Planning and Space Management to join the leadership team. This role is responsible for strategic long-range facilities planning and implementation. It oversees the planning, construction, renovation, maintenance, security, and space assignment activities for MSU Denver facilities and in partner with AHEC (Auraria Higher Education Center) on some shared facilities. Continuously assesses research and teaching facility needs and conducts planning to meet those needs. Serves as the senior advisor to Deans in these areas and manages allocated budgets. Position is responsible for the leadership and management of the Facilities Planning and Space Management office.

Salary for Announcement

The salary range for this position is $113,656 – $136,187. The final salary will be commensurate with experience and education.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Responsible for strategically identifying the short, mid and long term priorities that will help to shape and support the University’s academic mission, distinct identity and unique sense of place within the campus at large. Evaluate needs in academic facilities and provide Deputy Provost and Provost long-term and short-term plans to meet these needs.
• Represent MSU Denver on master and strategic planning efforts including working with AHEC.
• Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Facilities Planning and Space Development staff, including the Construction Project Manager, Facilities Manager, Environmental, Safety and Protection Manager and Office Manager . Effectively delegate work and fiscal budgets to staff, communicate performance expectations, provide constructive feedback and acknowledge achievements.
• Oversee major renovation projects and space allocation lead by the Construction Project Manager. Advise Deputy Provost, Provost and ASA leadership on most optimal plans for space management.
• Advise on effective use of physical resources to improve operational efficiency. Oversee security features of all MSU Denver buildings and shared spaces. Collaborate with Auraria Police Department and Emergency Preparedness to enforce security requirements and asset protection.
• Manage budgets allocated to MSU Denver buildings and equipment. Establish long term controlled maintenance budget methodology. Oversee the account management related to repairs, maintenance and renovation. Ensure proper record keeping and reporting.
• Serve as the liaison with federal, state and local agencies, companies and contractors and members of the University community and partners on all technical matters affecting facilities management. Work closely with AHEC and outside vendors to ensure the proper construction, renovation, and maintenance of teaching and research facilities and equipment. Represent MSU Denver on University-wide committees as assigned.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.



Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Architecture, Planning or other related fields.

5 years of progressive experience in facilities operations or construction management.



Preferred Qualifications

Academia/University experience strongly preferred.

An additional 5 years of progressive experience in the oversight of facility operations in a multi-building environment, including three years of project management experience.

Experience conducting budget management and record keeping expenditures.

Experience with state of Colorado capital processes including working with the Capital Development Committee (CDC), State Architect, etc.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Strong collaboration skills.

Strong desire to build a team with exceptional customer service.
