Position Summary:
College of Engineering and Information Technology. The Academic Advisor provides students with in-depth information concerning course descriptions, program requirements, prerequisites and registration procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Advises and assists students in development of academic plans and class schedules.
  • Reviews and performs preliminary evaluation of transcripts of transfer students.
  • Provides early advisement for transfer students.
  • Participates in SOAR (Southern's Orientation, Advisement and Registration) sessions including presentations, advisement and registration.
  • Assists in the resolution of individual academic problems.
  • Provides advisement on academic program changes.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate files and records.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    Effective communication (verbal and written), organization and human relations skills; ability to work well in a diverse environment; proficiency with computer and Microsoft Office Applications software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; successful completion of background investigation prior to employment.

    Preferred Education:
    Bachelor’s degree in a field closely related to one of the disciplines represented in the College of Engineering and Information Technology

    Preferred Experience::
    One or more years of related higher education work experience in graduate education; working knowledge of the policies and procedures of the College of Graduate Studies; previous experience as a graduate student advisor; experience with Hobsons AY; experience working with graduate program coordinators including communication regarding admission recommendations, and admission status determinations for graduate students.

    Salary Range: Up to a Budgeted Maximum of $34,114.78
