GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Dean provides strong, student-centered vision and strategic leadership and direction for the Science, Applied Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics departments and degree programs/concentrations and certificates, including: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, Horticulture, Construction Technology, Mathematics including Developmental Mathematics, Environmental Technology (Renewable Energy), Engineering and Applied Technology (Engineering Technology degree and certificates in Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics, Computer Science, and Aviation Maintenance Technology), and the Cape Cod regional STEM network.

The Dean is responsible for providing leadership and supporting excellence in instruction, curriculum and program development, faculty development, and student outcomes; overseeing external accreditation, periodic internal program review, and strategic planning processes; promoting the use of current and emerging technology and innovative pedagogy to improve student learning and success; monitoring local, regional and national trends to ensure programs meet workforce and public needs; analyzing learning outcomes assessments to propose and implement proactive strategies to continually improve student success and completion; implementing College administrative and academic policies; hiring part-time faculty and staff, implementing collective bargaining provisions; developing the academic schedule; developing and executing divisional and area budgets; assisting with writing and managing grants; facilitating community outreach; interfacing with K-12, post-secondary, and business partners to create new programs and working to advance the College’s mission and strategic plan.  The successful candidate will actively practice team-oriented behavior, and have demonstrated grit, courage, tenacity, integrity and patience in the face of challenges and the ability to suggest creative solutions to challenges.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Personnel Management and Supervision

  1. Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and stakeholders to align priorities of the academic program with the strategic plan of the College.
  2. Serve as the administrative officer of the Division and supervises full-time day faculty and adjunct faculty, program coordinators and support staff, as appropriate.
  3. Support faculty and staff innovation and creativity.
  4. Utilize data to improve program performance and student learning outcomes while advancing a culture of continuous improvement.
  5. Encourage excellence in teaching and professional development opportunities.
  6. Promote an inclusive climate, collegiality, and effective communication throughout the Division.
  7. Administer collective bargaining agreements as they relate to members of the Division and consults with the Human Resources Office in implementation of the collective bargaining agreement.
  8. Make recommendations to the Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs for filling vacant positions, proposing new positions, recruiting and hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty appointments, reappointments, salary adjustments, promotions, sabbaticals, tenure, and leaves of absence salary adjustments, promotions, sabbaticals, tenure and leaves of absence for all personnel in the Division.
  9. Conduct at least two Division meetings per academic year to communicate college-wide issues, review policies and engage faculty in conversation about department/program activities, assessment of student learning, innovations in pedagogy and other issues of importance to faculty.
  10. Assign teaching loads to Division faculty based on information assembled by Department Chairs.
  11. Resolve faculty, student, department, and divisional conflict at the lowest level.
  12. Facilitate an engaging, collaborative work environment to support diverse faculty, staff, and community, and seek and attract diverse perspectives.
  13. Meet with Division faculty members to discuss any matters of concern.
  14. Assist in overall development and administration of grant projects.

Curriculum Development and Management

  1. Assist Department Chairs and Program Coordinators in developing and maintaining appropriate course/program curricula and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  2. Assist faculty and staff with assessing the effectiveness of courses, programs, and services.
  3. Review and recommend revisions to program requirements, catalog descriptions and prerequisites within the division.
  4. Advise on program and policy changes and ensure timely communication with other college departments.
  5. Maintain appropriate records of programs and courses offered.
  6. Assist in the development and execution of articulation agreements with other institutions.
  7. Communicate and implement academic policies and procedures.
  8. Ensure that program advisory committees meet at least once every academic year and advisory committee input is used to revise and improve academic programs.
  9. Provide information and support to other areas of the College.

General Administrative Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate the cost center budget according to the College’s priorities and strategic plan.
  2. Assist faculty and staff with developing and updating strategic planning reports.
  3. Approve all expenditures by members of the division regardless of source of funding.
  4. Ensure that all expenditures for supplies, equipment and services follow college procurement policies and procedures.
  5. Assist Department Chairs and Program Coordinators in the development of the master academic schedule and assign faculty workloads within that schedule.
  6. Act on all faculty requests for attendance at professional meetings in consultation with the President or Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs.
  7. Recommend travel requests to the Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs.
  8. Ensure that Division policies and procedures are consistent with institutional policies and procedures.
  9. Represent the Division on college committees and serve on committees as assigned.
  10. Attend the Presidents Leadership Council.
  11. Collaborate with faculty, staff, the Dean of Enrollment Management and Advising Services, the College’s Communications Department and the Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs to annually review and revise academic information in digital and print formats.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Professional and External Affairs Management

  1. Attend and represent the College at statewide, regional, and other meetings, conventions, seminars, workshops, etc., as appropriate.
  2. Support and assist Department Chairs and Program Coordinators in matters of licensure, accreditation and related matters.
  3. Seek opportunities to establish new partnerships and assess the effectiveness of existing partnerships with community agencies, educational institutions, and workforce organizations that relate to the Division.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the division or equivalent.
  2. Three years of college level teaching experience.
  3. Three years of management experience in a post-secondary institution or in an area related to the departments in the division (Mathematics, Science, Engineering & Applied Technology, or Aviation Maintenance Technology).
  4. Experience developing academically sound programs that prepare students for the workforce and/or transfer to baccalaureate institutions.
  5. Experience evaluating student learning outcomes and reflecting on teaching practice, curriculum and instruction.
  6. Experience using and providing leadership in a variety or traditional and innovative pedagogical practices that promote student learning.
  7. Experience developing curriculum including using assessment strategies to measure instructional effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
  8. Experience working with diverse populations to create an inclusive and collegial campus climate.
  9. Demonstrated commitment to the comprehensive community college mission.

COMPENSATION:  Full-time, Non-Unit Professional Position.  Annual Salary Range of $98-$102,000, dependent upon qualifications.  Includes participation in a comprehensive employee benefits program.
