Job Description:

The Early Childhood Education Assistant will work with visitors to the Florida Museum’s new Discovery Zone exhibit that was created for ages 0-8 years and their caregivers. The position also will assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of early childhood education programs offered in conjunction with the exhibit for early childhood educators and young children 0 – 8 years old and their caregivers.

Other duties include:

  • Facilitate visitor engagement within the Discovery Zone
  • Develop and maintain Discovery Zone program equipment and materials
  • Carry out daily exhibit upkeep and cleaning as needed 
  • Deliver extraordinary customer service to all Museum guests and internal staff
  • Assist Early Childhood Educator in implementing education programs related to the Discovery Zone exhibit for children 0-8 years old and their caregivers including structured programs, drop-in programs, special event activities, and workshops for caregivers and early childhood educators
  • Assist School Programs and Visitor Services Coordinators in maintaining a tracking system on Discovery Zone program types and attendance including participant demographic information
  • Respond to informational requests through e-mail and telephone

Normal work schedule is 24 hours within 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday – Wednesday. Flexible schedule necessary to accommodate required weekend Discovery Zone hours and weekend and evening programming hours. Schedule varies with program needs and includes hours during times when the University is closed. The Discovery Zone is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas when the Museum is closed.

Advertised Salary:

$12.00 per hour 

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education and two years relevant early childhood education experience
  • Teaching experience with children 0 – 8 years old
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and safely lift up to 25 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and one year of experience working with young children
  • Broad knowledge of natural history topics and experience developing and teaching early childhood education programs
