Duties: For over 125 years, the Penn Museum's mission of research, teaching, collections stewardship, and public engagement has been focused around transforming understanding of the human experience. The Museum's collection of roughly one million objects, from stone tools and household items to architectural monuments and fine art objects, reveals the daily life as well as the extraordinary accomplishments of people from all over the world. Most of the objects in the collection come directly from the University of Pennsylvania's archaeological excavations and anthropological expeditions, and,as the Museum's archives house the related field notes, letters, research reports, photographs, and drawings, the Penn Museum is able to present them in its galleries with an understanding of their cultural and environmental contexts. Penn archaeologists and anthropologists are still exploring, excavating, and researching around the world today. The Museum is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications who can effectively harness its many resources into a comprehensive and strategic messaging program which drives awareness and builds visitation to the Museum. The director will manage and develop the metrics-driven planning, branding, marketing and communications (including print, online, digital, electronic, social and public relations) for the Penn Museum. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the Museum and as a member of the Museum's Executive Team, the director manages the day-to-day implementation efforts of the department and works with Museum staff, faculty and students to strategically position the Penn Museum as a destination of choice in Philadelphia and the region. Managing a marketing and public relations team, the director also works closely with individuals in other Museum departments responsible for community outreach and education, visitor services, programs, events, exhibitions, group sales, digital media and membership to implement paid and unpaid media campaigns, both internal and external to the Museum. Furthermore, the director will help to drive messaging around the Museum's forthcoming multi-year renovation project. The director also works collaboratively with other campus cultural organizations, including the Institute for Contemporary Art, the Arthur Ross Gallery, the Morris Arboretum, the Annenberg Centers and others.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred, in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field. At least seven years or more progressive experience in planning and managing marketing programs, advertising, and communication. Nonprofit and cultural experience a plus. Candidate must have a strong working knowledge of Web development, social media, branding. Solid experience using social media for PR & promotional projects. Ability to utilize a variety of software programs, databases, and search engines; design and desktop publishing experience preferred.
