The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Contractually Limited Term teaching appointment in the field of Engineering Communication. The incumbent will be associated with the Engineering Communication Program. The appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream and will be for a two-year term, commencing on July 1, 2017 and ending on June 30, 2019.
The Faculty welcomes applications from individuals with demonstrated experience and excellence in engineering communication teaching, pedagogy and curriculum development, preferably in a Civil and a Mineral engineering context. Candidates should have at least a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Preferred qualifications include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level.
The successful candidate will be expected to take primary responsibility for communication instruction in Civil and Mineral Engineering, a role which includes: (1) teaching the core communication courses in those Departments (including Engineering Communications, Civil Engineering Portfolio, and Surface Mining); (2) providing and coordinating support for communication components of core engineering courses (such as Introduction to Civil Engineering, Urban Ecology, Engineering Economics, Transport I, Mineral Capstone Design, and others); and (3) maintaining oversight of the communication curriculum in those departments. A second role would include the position of communication coordinator for the Engineering Science thesis course, which involves running workshops throughout the term to support thesis students, as well as assessing key communication deliverables. Engineering Communication Program tutoring, along with other teaching and administrative duties pertaining to the program may also apply.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices will be demonstrated through strong teaching evaluations, strong letters of reference from referees of high standing endorsing excellent teaching and commitment to teaching innovation, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
