The Fashion Design Technician provides support to fashion design faculty and students, and works with the students to assist them with their technical projects during scheduled classes and Open Studio periods. The Fashion Design Technician also helps oversee student workers in the Fashion Design Studio. This position provides additional support to the Fashion Design program such as assisting with fashion shows, field trips, and other activities required to enhance the Fashion Design program and maintain the facilities and the technical equipment.

Associate’s Degree in Fashion Design plus two years’ experience working in an educational fashion design environment. Valid driver’s license with good driving record; must be insurable.

Proficient in the use of industrial sewing and pressing equipment. Industry knowledge of technical fashion design. Ability to work effectively with colleagues in the department, and other departments of School of Design. Ability to read, listen, and communicate information and ideas through spoken and written language. Ability to use various means of communication (e.g. telephone, computer, other electronic devices) to work with students, peers, and outside contacts. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Fingering, standing and/or sitting, walking, talking and hearing. Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer terminal or operating industrial machines. The position may require additional hours for events, including evening, and weekends.

Essential Functions:
Supervise and instruct the students during Open Studio periods. Work one-on-one and/or in small groups with students assisting them with their class-related technical fashion design projects during scheduled classes and open studio periods. Maintain the design and sewing laboratories and the industrial equipment. Ensure daily preparation of the Fashion Design Studio and equipment (industrial sewing machines, specialty machines, pressing and other equipment and material) for classroom use by the instructors and students. Maintain accurate inventories of accessory machine parts and large equipment. Assist with extracurricular activities such as open houses, field trips, and fashion shows.
