Position Description

Under general supervision, organize, maintain, and coordinate the operation of the indoor and outdoor facilities and preparatory and stock rooms; maintain inventory of supplies; maintain and operate laboratory equipment; train student assistants and assist students and staff with projects and perform related duties as required.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Maintains inventory, order supplies, equipment, and preserved specimens for labs; contacts the Purchasing Department and vendors to achieve the best price and quality of ordered items; tracks status of orders.
• Coordinates the operation of the stockroom including the preparation of equipment, materials, and live specimens as needed by laboratory schedules of both full-time and part-time faculty.
• Assists department faculty with maintenance of stock cultures of microorganisms and periodic verification of their biological characteristics.
• Trains and coordinates the activities of lab assistants and assist in their duties when needed.
• Arranges and carries out procurement and proper disposal of human cadavers and body parts and maintains required legal records of these materials under the close supervision of faculty; curates anatomical preparations including cadavers, organs, and body parts.
• Assists department faculty in maintenance of safe and sanitary conditions in the laboratory environment and in the outdoor teaching facilities.
• Coordinates the safe storage, handling, disposal, and recordkeeping of hazardous chemicals, chemical waste, biohazardous materials and infectious waste.
• Provides technical assistance to instructors and students in the department.
• Performs or arranges for routine maintenance and minor repair of laboratory and field equipment; schedules periodic maintenance service with outside vendors.
• Assists department faculty with the health and husbandry of the live lab animal and plant collections including performing or overseeing diagnostic testing and administration of therapeutic medications and treatments.
• Assists department faculty with upkeep of the aviary, ponds, greenhouse, native hillside, and other outdoor teaching facilities.
• Assists department faculty with maintenance and curation of the department's teaching and museum collections of plant and animal specimens, fossils, and other materials.
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Associate's degree in biology or related field with strong technical abilities.
• Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
• Ability to:
1. Maintain an inventory system and order supplies as demonstrated by suitable experience.
2. Work independently and efficiently.
3. Communicate effectively and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and others in the course of performing assigned duties.
4. Obtain HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) certification within six (6) months of employment.

• Demonstrated skill in:
1. Using and maintaining diverse equipment common in biology laboratories.
2. Using WINDOWS-based software (including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).

• Knowledge in:
1. Microbiology lab procedures, aseptic technique, media, and reagent preparation, maintenance of stock cultures.
2. Bacterial taxonomy, characteristics, and identification procedures; familiarity with microbial pathogens and safe handling techniques.
3. Proper care and maintenance of living plants and animals.
4. Proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, infectious materials, and biohazardous materials.

This is a full-time, 12-month, classified bargaining unit position. Starting date: As soon as possible. Range 17 of the CSEA Salary Schedule with a starting salary of Step A, $3,640.00/month; progresses over time to $5,123.00/month. Excellent benefits package.
