General Summary of Position:

The Biomolecular Technologist provides technical expertise and support for daily operations of the molecular suite of equipment within the Biomolecular Characterization Lab, Core Research Facilities. Core Research Facilities (CRF), is the shared research laboratories program at UMass Lowell. In this role, the incumbent is responsible for training students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty and external clients in complex and highly sophisticated equipment and techniques. The Biomolecular Technologist serve as the expert and trainer for Illumina NextSeq 500 Sequencing Instrument and FlowSight Flow Cytometer. Working under minimal supervision from the Biomolecular Characterization Manager, , the incumbent is responsible for testing, developing, streamlining, improving and implementing protocols (new or existing) using cutting-edge nucleic acid and library preparation, next generation sequencing (NGS) and associated technologies. The incumbent will work directly with the researchers to provide services and training.
-Expertise in clinical diagnostics, human genetics, biochemistry and/or clinical microbiology.
-Essential: experience of DNA sequencing with automated analyzers preferable with Next Generation

Minimum Qualifications (Required):
-Bachelor's degree in biological or chemical sciences with at least five years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory, OR Master's degree with at least three years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory
-Requires demonstrated high complexity molecular diagnostics skills, including PCR, QPCR, nucleic acid extraction, DNA/RNA handling and sequencing
-Knowledge of NGS-based genomic research and related technologies is required
-Working experience in genomics-focused laboratory and understanding of biophysical technology employed using flow cytometry in cell counting, cell sorting, biomarker detection and protein engineering and multiparametric analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics
-Strong knowledge and hands-on skills in molecular biology is essential
-Keen attention to experimental detail and process is critically required
-The ability to work effectively with diverse groups

-Excellent written and verbal skills required for efficient communication of scientific details in a diversified environment
-Discerning ability to extract complicated technical information and translates the information to a less technical audience
-Perceptive communication skills
-Discriminating ability to take initiative and identify, prioritize, and plan activities necessary to meet projected goals
-Enthusiasm and aptitude in developing and delivering training materials to a broad range of trainees at various levels of knowledge and expertise
-Positive team player
-Organizational readiness skills, including the ability to plan, schedule, and successfully carry out multiple projects and poise in managing multiply projects and clients simultaneously
