The University of Illinois seeks a creative, collaborative, self-directed, outgoing person to join our team as an Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Science (SNAP-Ed) with University of Illinois Extension. This is a regular, full-time, 12-month academic professional position. As part of University of Illinois Extension, this position will be joining a statewide and national network of professionals who look to fulfill the mission of the Cooperative Extension System.

The Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Science (SNAP-Ed) is expected to concentrate programmatically in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Programs (SNAP-Ed). This programmatic concentration in providing educational leadership for the integrated content areas which empower limited-resource families to reduce the effect of factors placing them at risk nutritionally includes: 1) supporting units in program planning for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and SNAP-Ed, 2) providing guidance on program outcomes and metrics, and 3) providing training and technical assistance to unit teams in meeting program deliverables.

One full-time position is available.

Location: The Educator will provide programming in the Northwest region of Illinois and will be located in one of the County Offices served. This includes Boone, Bureau, Carroll, DeKalb, Henry, JoDaviess, LaSalle, Lee, Marshall, Mercer, Ogle, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark Stephenson, Whiteside, Winnebago, Counties.

Additional positions may become available in other locations.

This is a security-sensitive position. Comprehensive background checks, including but not limited to a criminal conviction information check, a CANTS check, and a review of the Registered Sex Offender list, will be conducted.

Specific responsibilities of the Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Science (SNAP-Ed) are as follows:
  • Provide program leadership, interpret and integrate information, maintain the competencies to develop and lead educational programming, and assist program staff in delivering educational programming per SNAP-Ed guidance.
  • Assist counties in assessing the needs of the SNAP-Ed target population in a systematic and analytical manner. This may include networking and collaborating with Extension County Directors, community organizations and other relevant groups.
  • Work as part of a team to develop and implement teaching and evaluation materials, as well as program delivery methods and be directly involved in the programmatic decision making process, specifically for the SNAP-Ed programs.
  • Facilitate the onboarding and mentoring of both new and existing SNAP-Ed unit staff.
  • Assist counties in the designated region in developing marketing plans and tools for SNAP-Ed programs.
  • Assist counties in the designated region in reporting program outcomes to local, regional, and statewide stakeholders.
  • Develop effective and contemporary approaches to communicate with audiences and partners. This may include constantly evolving electronic technologies.
  • Establish professional relationships and participate in campus-based partnerships that connect academic programs and research to complement Extension programming by partnering with Extension Specialists and/or faculty members on research projects as appropriate within the initiatives.
  • Develop professional collaborations with the community stakeholders and partners that serve the SNAP target population.
  • Market and represent Extension's interests to external partners and stakeholders in areas related to expertise.
  • Serve as an effective Family and Consumer Science team member and volunteer for leadership roles as appropriate.
  • Comply with all reporting deadlines and requirements (e.g. plans-of-work, activity and impact reporting, etc.)
  • Accept statewide responsibilities as requested.
  • Be an active member within a professional society(s) to keep abreast of changes within your discipline.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance competency in subject matter area.

  • Local, regional, and statewide travel required; personal transportation required.
  • To perform the functions of this position, the employee will be required to perform work both within an office and outside in the communities that are served, and must have the capability to travel from one location to the other in a timely fashion. Employee is responsible for securing personal transportation. A valid driver's license is preferred. Some work will be required during evening and/or weekends. When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subject to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may occasionally weigh up to forty (40) pounds and frequently weigh up to twenty (20) pounds, and twisting, pushing, and pulling movements. Administrative and Programmatic Relationship

The Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Science (SNAP-Ed) - Northwest Region is administratively and programmatically responsible to the Assistant Dean, Family and Consumer Science.

Qualifications
  • Required: Master's degree related to subject matter emphasis from an accredited institution of higher education. Candidates with a Master's degree in progress may be considered for interviews, but degree must be completed by hire date. Experience creating and providing educational or training programs to adult and/or youth audiences including limited-resource populations in diverse settings. Relevant experience with collaboratively engaging groups or communities to assess target population needs and subsequently create and implement strategic plans to meet set objectives at a local, regional, or statewide level. Strong oral and written communication skills. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team environment.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Nutrition, Adult Education, Family and Consumer Science, Dietetics or Public Health. Experience within the specialty field is highly desirable. Teaching experience in informal and formal settings. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain diverse networks.

The position is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
