About The Unit: UChicago Creative is the in-house marketing agency for the University of Chicago. Our team of creatives - writers, multimedia producers, designers, photographers, project managers, and more - offers comprehensive communications planning, implementation, and distribution to clients across the University. UChicago Creative is part of University Communications, with offices conveniently located on UChicago's Hyde Park campus.

Unit Job Summary: Reporting to the Assistant Director of Editorial for UChicago Creative, the Writer collaborates with clients and a creative team of producers, editors, photographers, designers, and project managers to create marketing communications materials of the highest quality in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment. The Writer will write and edit copy and manage a variety of projects, from interviews and feature stories to brochures, postcards, advertising, and other print and digital materials covering a wide range of subject matter. The ideal candidate will bring a high level of enthusiasm, creativity, strategic thinking, a journalistic attention to detail, and the ability to brainstorm and develop projects collaboratively as a crucial member of a creative team. Additionally, this person will represent UChicago Creative and University Communications in developing and maintaining positive and productive relationships with partners from across the University of Chicago. This includes being able to understand, articulate, and often propose communications goals, pitch creative concepts, lead meetings, interview stakeholders, run with feedback, and act as a communications expert on large-scale, multi-channel projects. Essential Functions: - Write creative content for a variety of media, including brochures, websites, posters, postcards, social media - Communicate complex University of Chicago topics, including faculty research and University history and culture - Conduct research and one-on-one interviews - Maintain a collaborative, team-oriented approach - Take ownership of projects at each phase until final delivery - Be instrumental in providing creative ideas for creative pitches to clients - Work seamlessly with graphic designers, conceiving editorial and design concepts in tandem and allowing for design to inform editorial and vice versa - Develop and maintain strong client relations through superb client communications, a client-centric attitude, and a mind for positioning and communications strategy - Other related duties as assigned In addition to a cover letter and resume, please submit a portfolio of writing samples up to 5 pages that highlights your breadth and creativity, samples from published pieces strongly preferred. You may include one additional cover sheet with the portfolio summarizing the work included and your role(s) [concepting, writing, project managing, etc.] as well as any results from the piece(s) [response, sales, click-through-rates, etc.].

Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Unit Experience: A minimum of three years of writing and editing experience and experience managing print publications required. Experience writing for the web and other digital media, including social media, required.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Superior writing skills with a high degree of creativity required. Working knowledge and comfort using Microsoft Word, required. High degree of comfort learning new software and technologies appropriate to business needs of the department an projects, required. Demonstrated ability to multitask in fast-paced work environment, manage project schedules, and meet deadlines required. Excellent client service orientation required. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously required Ability to engage with faculty research across a range of disciplines required. Familiarity with print production process preferred. Knowledge and understanding of basic marketing principles strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to write for established brands preferred. Familiarity with the University of Chicago preferred. Nonprofit or higher education communications experience preferred.
