Job Description

Title: A-1 Mechanic- Plumber

Division: Facilities Management and Campus Operations Reports to: Manager- MEP Services

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision ofthe Working Foreman is responsible for ens.uring that plumbing systems are in good operational state and safe for use. An A-1 Tradesperson must be able to accomplish established industry standard and code compliant tasks and must be able to work safely in accordance with accepted professional and Institute standards for quality and time as they relate to the following:

Principal Responsibilities:

Performs all activities related to Plumbing systems including:

  • Must be able to meet with customers to determine scope of work required, select and purchase materials to complete the task and/or solicit proposals from contractors when necessary and present them to Management for processing.
  • Must be able to identify and work around asbestos.
  • Must be able to work independently to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to identify and initiate repairs and replacement of all plumbing fixtures.
  • Must be able to design and maintain and replace domestic hot water heaters and systems.
  • Must have full knowledge of plumbing fittings and sizes.
  • Must have full knowledge of piping and sizes.
  • Must be able to verify and test pumps and motors for proper operation.
  • Must be able to repair and replace circulation pumps and motors.
  • Must be able to design and install a complete plumbing system including piping, fixtures, pumps and motors.
  • Must be able to check for power and be able to disconnect and re-connect power associated with plumbing .
  • Must be able to isolate sprinkler valves.
  • Must be able to identify and replace sprinkler heads.
  • Must be able to follow piping schematics.
  • Must be able to install piping and fixtures according to schematics and drawings.
  • Must have full knowledge ofthe operation and use of power tools; pipe vice, Sawzall, drill, drain cleaning equipment and torches (Propane, Acetyline and Brazing).
    • Must have some knowledge of welding.
    • Must be able to solder copper pipe over 2" diameter -40/60 and 95/5.
    • Must be able to cut and thread black pipe over 2" diameter.


  • Must be able to perform leak detection, investigation and repair including coordinating other trades when necessary.
  • Must be able to isolate pipes in need of repair while reducing disruption to others.
  • Must have a comfort level when working in manholes and confined spaces.
  • Must be able to clean and/or replace house traps.
  • Must be able to repair and replace gas ranges.
  • Assist in maintaining shop and work site(s) in a clean and orderly manner. o Must attend annual training classes approved and required by the Institute. o Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in all above listed tasks.
  • Additional items may be added to the above list at any time based on Institute demands.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, operation and repair of various types of plant controls equipment used in building heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Troubleshoot/service all types of controls, including pneumatic, electro-pneumatic and direct digital building systems and computer control interfaces.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of refrigerated air driers, gauges, pressure safeties and filtration devices, as well as controls and instrumentation.
  • Ensure completion of maintenance, repair jobs and renovation projects in accordance with established standards and schedules.
  • Work with other disciplines and management to proactively solve complex, multi discipline problems.
  • Attend training to be knowledgeable in current technology.
  • Assist injob planning by estimating quantities of materials and supplies required.

Preparation of material lists to include pricing and in formulating design.


Additional Responsibilities:


o Must demonstrate a commitment to customer service by communicating internally and externally, proper follow up, appropriate deferral to supervision and working as a member of the Physical Plant team .

o Demonstrate knowledge of the organization's Service Standards and incorporate them into the performance of duties.

o Anticipate University needs; identify areas for improvement by instructing staff

or informing supervisor.

o Implement maintenance requests from clients, other maintenance supervisors and project managers.


Minimum Qualifications:


o High School degree or equivalent.

o Must have a minimum of3 years of plumbing experience, as an A-II Tradesperson as detailed in the Stevens institute "A-Il Job Description (Plumbing Proficiency)" in an institutional or other approved work environment and must attend, complete, and

receive or possess a certificate in an advanced training course, as approved by Stevens Institute of Technology, which will provide the employee with a proficiency in plumbing.


Preferred Qualifications:


Familiarity with all types of mechanical electrical, plumbing systems, building automation systems, energy conservation programs and utility distribution. In addition, must possess the ability to function in stressful situations and respond to emergency conditions.
