The Director of Finance & Clinical Operations reports to the Associate Chair/Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) for the Department of Pediatrics and is responsible for all clinical operational issues in this large and complex Department. This includes accounting, business management, and financial reporting functions for the operating budget, clinical practice revenue, gifts, endowment, Chair start-up, designated income and funding for fellows. This position is also responsible for maintaining the financial and reporting aspects of the Department's relationship with its primary source of gift support, the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health (LPFCH). In collaboration with the DFA, the Director will provide financial and management support for many complex issues including Funds Flow, Faculty Compensation and clinical profit sharing. The Director will also manage the Department‘s Clinical Practice operations including charge capture and billing for both inpatient and outpatient services. S/he will work closely with the Division Chiefs and Managers in the 19 Divisions to establish financial management practices, policies and procedures for the Department. The Department's annual consolidated budget exceeds $200 M.

The Director will provide accounting and financial analysis support to the DFA, Chair, and the Associate Chairs. This individual will analyze and evaluate the cost benefits and cost effectiveness of all current and future programs and will develop strategic planning concepts and initiatives through the creation and presentation of financial data and modeling which demonstrates the financial impact of existing and future programs. The Director will work closely with Department, Divisional and LPCH leadership to analyze and support outreach initiatives. This individual will provide historical financial information and future projections for the planning process.

In collaboration with the DFA the Director will represent the Department with School of Medicine Finance, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, LPFCH and the University Controller's Office.

Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Advanced expertise in business and management computer applications and databases.
  • Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage deadlines.


  • Advanced degree in Business Administration or related field preferred.
  • Experience in a clinical department at an academic medical center desired.
  • Ability to perform business analysis to determine best use of resources to complete complex tasks and projects; must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, and sometimes ambiguous environment with changing priorities.
  • Expert-level skills in Microsoft Excel
