Position Summary

Functions as the onsite representative of MSU EHS and the liaison between GRRC staff and campus safety teams; assists in the development and manages the implementation and monitoring of comprehensive programs to control and/or eliminate chemical, biological, radiation, and occupational hazards; provides for the safe and proper storage, transport, and disposal of radioactive, chemical, and biological waste materials in compliance with local, state, and Federal regulations and guidelines; work extensively with investigators and their staff to ensure a safe working environment that promotes research. While the position is based in Grand Rapids the successful candidate will be required to spend extended periods of time at other locations, including the MSU campus in East Lansing.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in analytical methods and instrumentation, chemical calculations, gas chromatography, spectroscopy, scintillation counting, industrial hygiene monitoring techniques, the distillation and handling of hazardous materials and knowledge of Federal and State health/safety regulations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health/safety and chemical safety, radiation safety, and biological safety; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; clinical or research laboratory experience; proficiency with Microsoft Office programs; excellent communication skills; experience developing, presenting and maintaining safety training programs; experience with hazardous waste management; involvement in emergency response; familiarity with digital records management.

Description of End Date

This is an off-date position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.

Summary of Physical Demands

Regular lifting of monitoring and testing equipment to and from office to lab inspections.  May include the use of a ladder.

Summary of Health Risks

May involve exposures to biological materials, the use of a respirator, and working in noisy areas.
