Job Description:

Cancer Center Support Grant Support:

  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining Cancer Center Support Grant competitive application and progress report templates for each proposal section
  • Collaborates with principal investigator and other key senior leadership authors in the development of section narratives and administrative components (non-budget) of the grant proposal
  • Responsible for formatting, substantive editing, proofreading, and finalizing the document as required and requested
  • Develops a standard style guide and review criteria for data checking and content verification
  • Ensures the readability, clarity, consistency, and conformance to NCI submission requirements
  • Communicates (telephone, email, meetings) with principal investigator and key senior leadership authors as necessary to ensure the accuracy and clarity of the documents and to meet both internal and sponsor submission deadlines

 Scientific Manuscripts, Abstracts, Posters, and PowerPoint Presentations:

  • Collaborates with the principal investigator and other team members with primary responsibility for the development of scientific presentations that report the results of research conducted by MCC investigators
  • Responsible for editing all extramurally-funded proposals for grammar, readability, clarity, consistency, and conformance with all applicable requirements
  • Reviews on an ongoing basis publications from the FDA, OHRP, NIH, NCI, CTEP, and VCU-IRB to determine if current documents or templates need to be updated as per new requirements; notify appropriate PI or director as required and suggest new language
  • Determines (to the extent possible based on content knowledge) that document language is scientifically/medically correct, consistent, and justifiable; notify appropriate PI or director as required and suggest new language
  • Determines (to the extent possible based on content knowledge) that document language is responsive to the document requirements; notify appropriate PI or director as required and suggest new language
  • Works closely with presenters and takes a leadership role in the development of scientific presentations, ensuring accuracy and adherence to length and time allowed for presentation
  • Takes a leadership role in the development of posters required for site visit and other venues to highlight scientific discoveries in an accurate and atheistic visual representation of the shared resources and initiatives underway at UF and UFHCC
  • Prioritizes projects based on a combination of factors including receipt date, deadline date, amount of work needed, and overall impact of the project to MCC

 Cancer Center Scientific Writing Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains research proposal related templates that facilitate the writing of proposal-related documents with a consistent style throughout, and which also facilitate the development of multi-investigator grants such as P01s
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining templates for INDs and their associated components, clinical protocols, informed consent documents, and other documents that are needed on a recurring basis
  • Responsible for determining if documents and templates conform with all applicable regulations, current guidance, and policies; inform appropriate PI or director as required and suggest appropriate correction
  • Develops and maintains templates that facilitate subsequent submissions to common audiences (journal, national meeting, etc.)
  • Responsible for formatting, substantive editing, proofreading, and finalizing documents as required and requested
  • Ensures the readability, clarity, consistency, and conformance to applicable submission requirements
  • Ensures that the applications conform to the appropriate style requirements as specified by the funding agency
  • Develops Center research SOPs and/or policies, to include internal and external safety reporting requirements for active clinical protocols

 Publication Tracking Management:

  • Responsible for managing the electronic submission of meeting abstracts and scientific/medical manuscripts
  • Assures that all society/publisher requirements are adhered to in the development and completion of manuscripts, prior to submission
  • Responsible for obtaining and maintaining the documentation for any required copyright transfers, conflict of interest statements, or other publisher-specific requirements
  • Tracks progress and responds to publication queries, as appropriate
  • Maintains bibliography management system for efficient utilization in the manuscript development process
  • Verifies and updates all cancer center program publication listings for submission in annual progress reports and competitive application submissions
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating cancer center member biosketches and other support documentation for inclusion in grant submissions.

Advertised Salary:

$68,000-$84,000 annually; Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area; or an associate's degree and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced/terminal degree in a science or health profession strongly preferred
  • Experience in an NCI-designated Cancer Center and working knowledge of Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) administrative guidelines, activities and responsibilities essential.
  • Significant experience in an academic medical environment, working in research involved with technical/scientific writing
  • Grant writing experience and scientific manuscript preparation and submission experience
  • Understanding of scientific methodology
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and interpersonal skills that facilitate effective interactions within cross-functional teams and with external customers
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills; leadership ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments with competing deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize, focus, work independently, and be flexible when contingencies arise.  Ability to identify issues and generate solutions, or request appropriate intervention by management
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, both oral and written
  • High level of proficiency in Adobe, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various databases required. Experience with various graphic and presentation software a plus
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data, interpreting information, provide logical conclusions/projections and program evaluation and anticipating costs/obligations
  • Ability to work in and appreciate a culturally diverse organization
  • Significant experience in project management, time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage details of multiple and complex projects with firm schedules and competing deadlines.  Proven ability to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven work atmosphere and able to assess environment and adjust plans according to situation with a solution-oriented perspective
  • Advanced understanding of medical and scientific terminology
  • Proven ability to work in a fast paced, demanding environment, and adapt to changing priorities without supervision
  • Considerable experience in analyzing data, interpreting information, providing logical conclusions
  • Program/project management experience
  • Ability to develop and implement innovative and creative approaches to seminal events
  • Demonstrated integrity, dependability, sound judgment, teamwork and resourcefulness to establish and maintain collaborative, positive and effective working relationships with multiple internal and external partners on behalf of UFHCC leadership
