Basic Function:
Reporting to the Executive Director of Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, this role will support university-wide diversity and inclusion initiatives to achieve strategic and operational objectives, including the coordination of specific programs and events. The role will lead key projects and initiatives for the Executive Director and the Division. Handle initial inquiries relative to diversity and inclusion at WPI requiring extensive engagement with WPI internal and external constituents, including faculty, staff, community organizations, and external board members. Additionally, this position will plan and execute targeted outreach and initiatives in alignment with WPI's strategic approach.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support strategic inclusion and intercultural initiatives, events and programs across the institute. Assist in the logistical details of programs sponsored by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI), including catering orders, space reservations, staffing needs, booking speakers or performers, program registrations and necessary follow-up for participants once enrolled.
  • Support the Executive Director’s development and execution of a strategic plan to achieve strategic and operational objectives
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director in establishing metrics, analyze data, review and revise all print and electronic communications to promote an inclusive campus environment. Maintain and update departmental web pages, online forms, and portals for the Office. Draft, edit, and proofread correspondence supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives across the Division.
  • Support the Executive Director by documenting the evaluation of programs and events by assisting with informal and formal assessment and benchmarking compilation.
  • Administer Division Case Management System
  • Provide administrative support for WPI’s Project Inclusion Initiative
  • Provide administrative support for WPI’s Presidential Diversity Council
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other campus offices and departments to ensure high quality services for all campus community members.
  • Offer confidential administrative support to the Executive Director and Division, managing the Executive Director’s calendar appointments,
  • Serve as liaison to the Office of Multicultural Affairs

    Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Five or more years of related work experience, preferably in an academic setting.
    Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook).
    • Must demonstrate discretion and good judgment in handling confidential and sensitive matters. Must have the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding matters of significance.
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with internal and external community including internal and external constituents.
    • Attention to detail, good organization and time management skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively, required. Must be able to work effectively and able to handle the stress of shifting and competing priorities and meet deadlines. Reacts well under pressure, manages competing demands, shows resourcefulness and works proactively.
    • Available to work occasional extended hours, which may include nights and weekends during the academic year
    • Demonstrated skill in establishing good working relationships with students, staff and faculty. Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively in public settings, required.
    • Critical thinker, and mature problem solver required. Demonstrates a willingness to take ownership for wide-ranging responsibilities with accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and monitor own work to ensure quality.
    Preferred Experience:
    • Experience in the field of equity, inclusion, diversity, and/or equal opportunity and in developing constructive working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and/or other aspects of human diversity
    • Should have an interest in and understanding of the current challenges and barriers in supporting diversity and inclusion ideology, values and initiatives, and the challenges connected to encouraging pluralism.
    • Experience in supporting initiatives that impact positive change
    • A strong interest in and understanding of STEM education issues surrounding underrepresented populations.
    • Event planning experience
    • Experience analyzing and compiling data
